y-pipe thingy problem

Yea so ive got the y-pipe hitting the floor problem with my longtubes. Neat. IT does the rumbling against it under load and when the transgo shifts to second. BAM big hit under there. Now i know of crushing the floor and i know of wrapping something around it. But heres my questions. Could this set off the knock module and cause timing retard? If so would getting the LT4 knock module fix that? and WHAT kind of wrap and WHERE can i get it?

yes, it can. i think wrapping would be a band aid for your problem. do some searches. i have seen this covered before. also, i don't think the lt4 module will help with that. find out why it is hitting the car and fix it.

IMO opinion crushing the floor is a very half--s/ghetto fix. There are a few things that you can try. One is to loosen (not remove!!) all of the bolts (boths headers, flanges @ y-pipe and where it meets the catback) and make sure that the rear of your driver side header is as low as it will go. This bought me another 1/16-1/8 of an inche. You can also try grinding slightly at the crossmember (don't go too crazy) because that is where it is more than likely hitting. If it is only hitting on a very small patch of the pipe (an inche or so) one good tap on the pipe with the hammer would probably give you all the clearance you need.

Another thing, what transmission mount are you running? If your running the energy suspention mount AND you have the metal shim plate installed you should remove the shim and it will give you some more room as well.

If ya fix the floor right it ain't getto.
I cut the sides out of the brace and heated it and bent it up to the floor and welded it. Repainted it and it looks pretty good.
I have 2 x 3-1/2 to 4" out the back and IT won't hit on every beer can it runs over.
Beating on the pipe for clearance is getto and interrupts flow.

i think i might just stick a jack under there and crush that lowered floor part up so its just not there anymore.

You can put a piece of heater hose between it and it will be good. I done mine like that about years ago and I haven't had anymore problems out of it.

I agree, but what I was getting at is that just going under there and pounding away at the undercarriage of your car just doesn't seem like the best approach.

Yep,ya got that right

This was before welding and finishing. The black paint is to keep it from rusting down here.It was painted gray.

Re: y-pipe thingy problem

just take a real good look at it before you go banging away though. I have a similar problem. My y-pipe was made up when my motor mounts were bad, now with new mounts my y-pipe rests agaist the k-member and vibrates on it...really annoying but will be fixed soon.

Re: y-pipe thingy problem

what is the purpose of that part of the undercarraige? From the look of the picture it looks useless. If this is the case ill probly just crush it up a little bit and be done. Maybe paint it a little if i mess it up too bad

Re: y-pipe thingy problem

It strengthens the floorboard for the front of the seat is the only thing I could figure. That is why I did it that way and rewelded it.
Now if ya figure on not being in a head on or hitting a post beat away.
