XE grinds and the need for new lifters.

Taking into consideration the steep characteristics of the XE grinds, (I am installing the 224/230) is the need for new lifters a good idea?

If this cam is going to cause the need for new lifters in a short time, I night as well do it now.

If it matters, I have '94 w/50k miles.

I would put new lifters in just as an insurance option. You have it all tore apart and I would not want to risk damaging my new cam by running old lifters. I would look into Comp R lifters.

Cargasm I have an XE cam and I spoke with Comp about lifters and they assured me the stockers would be fine. The only reason to change them would be for an existing problem. Just check the roller on the old ones for smooth operation and any other visual damage. If you find nothing run-em don't waste your money.

This is the very question I was about to post about.

I have the XE230/236 and I have been told both.

What options do we have for lifters?

i have the Xe 236/242 with strong valve springs

i'm more worried about my seat breaking than my lifters colapsing

You're worried about breaking the valve seats? How does that happen? I just installed XE230/236. Do these steeper ramps require tighter valve lash? Please explain to me!

I reused my OEM lifter with a 214/224 XE grind with very steep (31xx series) lobes with no problems. Then again, 50K is a fair number of miles. You might consider replacing them as "insurance" while it's apart. Depends on your budget and risk tolerance. What you definitely should replace are the stock pushrods with HD pieces. The stockers will not like the higher loads from the springs you will need to use as well as higher rpm.

Listen to Rich Krause.

I strongly agree with using the best pushrods you can buy. Check for the correct length on your engine with and adjustable pushrod (available from Comp).

****I need to type fast, my girlfriend is in the shower...I am supposed to be acting romantic.*****

I already have a new set of cmotorsports chromoly pushrods. I am a big fan of going overboard in terms of security so I will go ahead and get a new set of lifters. The extra couple hundred bucks is worth not breaking at 6000 rpms

With that said, what is everybody using for lifters since the comp R's seem to be in the land of discontinued.

Thanks, Adam M.

I've had good luck with Crane roller lifters, used with a 224/230 xe 3100 grind, Crower 68390-3 springs and cm pushrods.
