Gutted cats tend to create turbulence in the pipe and slow you down. Better off to either do a offroad pipes or high flow cats.

By the way, gutting the cats for us 96-97 owners is not really a free mod. After you gut the cats, your rear o2 sensors will throw a code, and the car will start running pig-rich. So you either have to get the o2 simulators ($80) or get it tuned (mail order-$125) or do a OBD-I conversion ($275). To make it short, don't gut your cats. If you get longtubes, off-road pipe and eliminate the rear o2 at the same time, I can understand, but otherwise, it is worthless. It is pretty much impossible for a human to feel the 5hp, if that, gutted cats will give you.
I posted this earlier, and the same applies to your question. Don't do it.

Although a lot of people swear it helps, I never had any increase by doing it, and I've done it on a lot of different cars. It also makes the car run and smell worse and in my opinion doesn't sound as good.

I can't remember if you replied to a post I made in the for sale section or not but I have a off road pipe for a dual cat car for sale. When I slapped that off road pipe on and drove down the street it was a huge difference. I jammed the gas around a corner and the rear tires almost broke loose....and thats with a set of 315s in the back! Email me if you're interested. Blown383@yahoo.com

700+rwhp through dual cats, so I'd say "not".

don't ditch your cats. After 1.5 yrs of running with an off road pipe and feeling no performance gain i just bought a stock cat to put on my car. Save your time and cats.

I'd be a bit worried about any LT1 that couldn't break almost any tire loose going around a corner...I'm decently sure I could throw slicks on my car and still break them loose if I was doing a corner..?

Umm....I also have the GW torque arm, control arms, in addtion to the 315s etc....so the car REALLY REALLY hooks.

On a mostly stock car gutting the cats or replacing them with offroad pipes is only worth about 5 hp. It's not worth it in my opinion.
