Won't Start
Won't Start
Symptoms:
1. Car won't crank. I hear the fuel pump prime and also hear a relay that sounds like it's coming from under the passenger side dash clicking.
2. Battery is good, charged it to be sure and measured it with a DVM, 13.8v.
3. Starter solenoid is not energizing at all, no clicks whatsoever.
History:
Just finished a cam/springs and new opti installation. One of the more frustrating installations that I've done in my life but this is something that I've come to expect when working on this car. IT TAKES PATIENCE. Anyways, I digress...
I did break the Low Oil Level Sensor on the side of the oil pan. Couldn't find one in town except at the dealer who wanted $60.00 when I can get it from GMPP for $30.00 shipped. At any rate the broken one is installed temporarily so that I could put oil in the car. I don't think this would cause a non-cranking symptom would it? I've also figured that I'll have to drain a good portion of that brand new synthetic oil that I just filled the car with when I get the new one. As you can see I'm very clever.
I'm going to go through the troubleshooting procedures in the service manual. The way I read the symptoms the only choices I have are:
1. Broken PCM (Please no, too expensive).
2. Starter (Bad Solenoid)
3. Wiring Open in the circuit.
Please help.

Possibly the safety switch on the cluch. You could bypass it.First you should jump the starter.Use a small screwdriver.MAKE SURE it is in nuetral.Touch the screwdriver from the hot wire on the starter to the small wire.It should crank.
If it does not crank,check- 1-battery connections
2-starter conections,including the
surface to the engine.
3-Battery cables.and ground straps
If it cranks,There are several possibilities.from the ignition switch,VATS,clutch switch..etc.

Thanks,
Just checked. It sparks pretty good when I short the two together but no crank. I'm going to remove it and take it to the local parts house for a test? Curious time for it to go out, was working fine before I started this little project.

Update.
It was the starter. Got a new one and it fired immediately. Of course I now have a world class rear oil pan gasket leak. I kind of expected it because I knew I didn't get it on quite right, but damn I must have really missed it because it's really coming out of there. Good thing I checked everything carefully before going very far. I guess I know what I'll be doing this weekend....
Did get the car on a brief test ride however and all I can say is wow. Car is revving like there isn't any load on the engine. Kept it under 5k but It wanted to go way more and faster
I think I'm really going to like this cam.
