Will too high fuel pressure kill fuel pump?
Will too high fuel pressure kill fuel pump?
Just as the title states. I just replaced my fuel pump and was wondering if the fuel pressure was too high could that have killed it?
Re: Will too high fuel pressure kill fuel pump?
Well the busted one I just took out was from some Ebay company - TRE Performance... I replaced it with a Walbro unit this afternoon.
60 - 65 psi at an idle was what it was running at. I backed it down to 43-45ish.

Re: Will too high fuel pressure kill fuel pump?
I'm pretty sure the TRE performance pumps are made in china. I think they're just Walbro knockoffs with quieter gears. A high pressure walbro gss340 will run at 65psi all day every day.
Why are you adjusting your fuel pressure in the first place?

Re: Will too high fuel pressure kill fuel pump?
I wasn't, I installed the adjustable fpr when I did my top end and it came set that high. I didn't notice untill after I put the new pump in and put a gauge on the fuel rail - which is why I questioned if the high pressure could kill the old pump.
Re: Will too high fuel pressure kill fuel pump?
I bet that ran well
Just looking at a chinese fuel pump wrong will cause it to fail.
Contact TRE, they seem like a fairly well established company, they might warranty it for you.
If you do get a walbro make sure its genuine, there are chinese knockoffs everywhere.

Re: Will too high fuel pressure kill fuel pump?
I'm pretty sure it's the real deal this time. I avoided Ebay, bought it threw Jegs, and the unit itself even says Walbro with all the right markings. I'm confident it'll be ok from now on. I'm investing in a perment fuel pressure gauge so I can monitor this s#!t from now on.
Re: Will too high fuel pressure kill fuel pump?
Why so much pressure? You're basically dead-heading the pump unless you're running WOT all over the place. I'd stick to around 50psi for a driver... and 60psi for the short trip strip/street car.

The country of origin has been questioned elsewhere also. I sent them an email asking them where they are made. This was their reply:
"They are manufactured in the same place as all Apple Laptops and ipads, China, just like every fuel pump sold outside of Walbro and Bosch.

AFA pressure, unless your tune was set to handle larger injectors you will run too rich. Assuming you have stock 24 lbs. injectors, at 60 psi they will actually be closer to 28 lbs. (source http://www.rceng.com/technical.aspx)
AFA why it burned out, do you have a heavy duty wiring harness? Both Racetronix and Casper sell one, and it is really needed for a high performance pump, which has a greater current draw - ~10 Amps, which is too much for the 18 gauge wire used in the factory wiring harness. You need at least 12 gauge wire (what Casper uses) or even 10 gauge (what Racetronix uses).
Re: Will too high fuel pressure kill fuel pump?
The old pump was over a year old but I appreciate the foot work. It probably had it's time anyway. If it was less than a year you better believe I'd be contacting TRE LOL. In any event - it's kind of a mood point now. It's all fixed and running fine.
BTW - Its not stock. 30lb/h red tops with a tune to handle it and yes I have a racetronix wiring harness. Thanks for looking out for me.

First, you are welcome. We are supposed to be here to help each other, how else do we learn? I ask questions also, and other members help me.
Second, glad you have it going again and the tune is already in place. The higher pressure would still have made it run too rich unless the tune specified a larger injector.
Lastly, to answer the original question - No, with a proper wiring harness, which you had, the pump should not have burned out at 60 p.s.i. Both TRE and Walbro use the same basic pump motor for LS1s also, which run at 4 bar or 58 p.s.i. all day long.
I do find this interesting, and learned a couple of things, so thank you for leading me down the path.
