Will SES flash from trans. problem???
Will SES flash from trans. problem???
I'm hoping that someone has come across this problem before. First off the car is a 96 LT1 with 108000 miles on it, the only work to the tranny was just a transmission tune up or whatever the dealership reamed me for. (probably just a new gasket). Anyways, when the car first starts and is cold I can hear something either engine or possibly the trans knocking. The higher the rpms the louder and faster the knock.
About 2 weeks ago I was going to work cruising at around 2000 rpm when the car felt like it lost power or something, when I hit the gas a little more it went like normal. At one point it did it and I nailed the throttle and it went like everything was fine, no loss of power. Everytime this happens the SES starts flashing, its been around 2 weeks and now it does it more often but still only when its cold. Just wondering if the SES can be caused by someting other than the engine or emissions equipment? Or has anyone ever experienced anything like this?
I really appreciate any words of wisdom.
Thanks,
Rich

I am pretty sure that there is no SES light for transmission problems. It sounds like ignition. Plugs, wires, coil, or opti. 108,000 is a lot of miles for an opti to bear. Mine went after 60,000!! You have an OBD-II so take it to Autozone and have them scan it for free. Then come back and tell us what the code was. That would make it a lot easier to diagnose the problem.

Well I do appreciate the info but damn i was hoping it wasnt something like that. i recently had headers installed (worst thing ive done on a while) and i was hoping it wasnt a burnt wire or something like that. I had the opti replaced last year, it made it to about 90000. all tune up items have been done recently as well. i actually have a day off tomorrow so i guess i will look at it then.

Hey 95z28 -quicksilver, do you think it could be from a wire burning up? Today it started acting up bad and I'm wpndering if at low rpm it is losing spark from being burnt and when i floor it it givews enough spark. or would a burnt wire just not work?

That is certainly a possibility. My car was stumblimg about a year ago. I replaced the opti, coil, and plugs. When I changed out my coil it helped(i guess because it increased the spark enough). Then one day I crawled underneath my car when it was running and saw that one of the wires was arching onto my header. So do a thorough check. Wait till its nighttime, roll the car up onto rhino ramps, and check for a bluish spark. My wire was burnt almost all the way through and was causing my stumble. Its definatley worth checking out. Sometimes its the things that you look over that are the real problem.
