will this LT1 pass Emissions Test?

I'm considering buying this 94 TA and need to know how much it's going to take to get it thru testing. Can someone with experience guide me a little. here's what the seller told me about the cars mods

The EGR setup I still have, but the cat that was on the car was gutted when I bought the car. I also took the AIR system off and the main tubing that goes with it. It is a system that heats the cat up to reduce emissions. I could not make any guarantees about it passing any emissions test and I doubt it would. You could do some research and ask some questions on the board about testing and tricks to pass.

The EGR system has been taken off but he still has the parts.

why do people do this kind of stuff just to try and get a few horse power?

If you all think i need a cat, where should i get one, will I also need to hook that AIR system he metions? I will ask him if he can do the egr for me.

thanks guys

Well is there more to this story?
Does it have a cam & long tubes?
The air system is not for the catalyst just cold start/intial start-up.
Not familar w/ the testing specs in your area do you know if they dyno them?
Those tests are harder to pass w/ a modded car.
The EGR will affect NOX emissions but not all states programs test for this.
Another thing to consider, is the SES light on for lack of EGR & air pump?
Did they tune/modify the PCM??

good questions , it does have headers but no cam, the exhaust gas heats the cat anyway, so i'm not too worried about that. It has a fully modded exhaust.

I live in maryland they dyno it and hook the tailpipes to hoses. when i did my y87 they just like did a visual inspection and that was it so i'm not 100% sure what they going to do but want to be prepared for the worst.

this guy tells me that he has had the car programmed and it runs a little rich, so i guess that's really bad, right? How much would it cost to get a performance shop to program it back to factory settings?

sounds like this guy has the car all ****ed up when it comes to emissions but he's got it the drivetrain in good mechanical shape and it only has 55,000 miles.

What makes you thing it was done to make "a few horse power"?...... Removing the EGR system has no effect on WOT performance at all. Neither does removing the AIR system.

well that's what i assumed because there is no other reason, so your saying this guy basically removed these systems for absolutly no reason?

most people take it off to run aftermarket headers.

If its runing rich, that is where its going to hurt you at. If you can lean it out, and as long as you have cats, I think you will be fine.

IF your going to buy it, just have the guy get you a valid emissions report/certificate for it as a term for buying it.

well, his local government doesn't test at all so.

I didn't think about the header clearence, so if we just get it programmed to what it should be and i put a cat on it will most likely pass. I asked if he could put the egr system back on but he hasn't answered yet,

thanks guys, i would like to get some more opinions as well.

Let him smog it. Tell him the only way you'll buy it is with a smog certificate. CA requires a smog certificate everytime the car is sold.

where is the best place to get a new cat converter for this car?

about getting a smog certificate, his local government doesn't require testing so how would he have it certified? I think that it will not pass in maryland as is, but i'm dicussing having him get it reprogrammed because it's running rich and he is selling the car as is so I don't mind getting the converter.

He's in the states right? He should at least put all the original smog equipment back on the car for you. Either that or lower the price to compensate.

yeah, he's in ohio. I'm talking it out with him, i think we can get it worked out, he bought the car used and the clown who owned before did some of this silly stuff. He doesn't have a cat or the air system for it. He removed the EGR and had it programmed to run rich, I asked him if possible to please put the EGR back on and get it programmed back to factory.

Actually that's not true. Too lean will cause you to fail a smog test too. As you run leaner the NOx levels rise. If it runs good the way it's programmed, do a pretest. It might pass with a new cat.
Does it have shorty headers or longtubes? That will help you determine what you need to do about a cat. If it has longtubes you may be looking at having to fab up a y pipe to install the cats, and that may give ground clearance issues.
You should be able to pick up the parts to reinstall an AIR system from a dismantler.

Well since I live in Hagerstown to I guess and can help. I passed emissions about a year and a half ago with no cat and a flowmaster. Just make sure the engine is nice and hot. I dont remember them doing a visual on it though just used the sniffer. Now I have hooker longtubes with true duals and no cats so they cant even use the sniffer on it so I have to fab something up with it He removed the air and egr to get rid of usless clutter in the engive bay. I did to. Not sure how you can work it out since he is a couple hours away but as long as you but a cat on there that should be alringt. The emissions people dont know about air and egr stuff. There is also stuff you can put in your gas tank to help pass emissions. Dont have any experience with it though but it shouldnt hurt.
