Will a LS1 drop right into an LT1 body?
Will a LS1 drop right into an LT1 body?
Alright, just what the subject says....Could I pull the engine and trans out of my 96 and drop a LS1 right in, or is there some kind of difference in the body that I dont know about? My car is about to hit 100k miles, and if I were to get something else, it would more than likely be an LS1. However, I would rather have my car as it is now w/ an LS1 and a t-56 b/c I like the 96-97 style body more and the 98+. Anything I should know about concerning this?? TIA.
100k? You are just getting broken in.
Why do you need a new engine?
You can put the LS1 in, but you won't be able to close the hood. The LS1 sits up higher. An aftermarket raised hood or swap to the new style front end would be needed.

The hood will fit on a LT1 TA don't know about Z though?? I read on a site that you need the 98 computer as it is useable with your gauges and interior harness and the newer ones are not. There is a company that has a web site that has done this but I can't remember who...maybe tacreations???
But like everyone says the LS1 is a NICE stock motor, but its all about air pump and you can make your LT1 a pretty good pump for the price of that 3500 (on the LOW side) of an LS1 and T56 tranny the trannies are not interchangeable.
I mean my heads and cam car kills stock LS1's no flames please, there are many LS1 that are faster than me but haven't ran into a stock one that can take me, and my car has 100 K on it

Are there any examples of what you say on the 'net? I don't guess I have seen any, but I have not been looking, either.Given what it costs to put an LS1 in a 93-97, it seems to make more sense to modify the LT1.
thanks for the responses, guys...So I guess the jury is still out on whether or not it will actually fit. In response to the questions about why I wouldn't just build the current motor instead of swapping out for an LS1:
Well, basically I am not very interested in making tons of power..Im wasnt thinking of doing the swap b/c I thought the LS1 was that much better of an engine. I just figured that another stocker would be the easiest way to go, and its much easier to find low mileage LS1 engines than to find low mileage LT1's. I also want to swap out my A4 for a T-56 so justing finding a motor/tranny combo seemed like the easiest thing to do..Im gonna do alot more research, though, before I even begin to actually do anything about it.
If anyone else has any info, I would still love to hear it.

the jury is not still out. it will fit if you have enought money. heck get a 502 or something. all it takes is money.
now being cost effecrive is another story. do you relize how fast of a car you would have if you just put that money into your lt1.
the lt1 been good to us. dont be a trader

first of all, 100K is nothing. im coming up on double that. second, just rebuild the lt1 w/ forged internals. will cost you less than 1K if you do the work yourself. will be long lasting, and probably a decent increase in power.
