Question Will it Fit?!!?

Hey everyone, ive been outta z28.com for a while now, while i rearrange cars.. but now i have a very decent 1995 3.4 v6. But as everyone knows, those motors are slow as hell! I have a 455olds motor (should be sitting aound 650HP!) that i have been building up and should be done with soon along with a built TH400 that i had a friend of mine do.. Just wondering if anyone knows if i will be able to get her to fit into the bay, or am i going to have to do some cutting? I would like to have it done by cristmas so i can drop it in early next summer! any ideas?! thanks

i know a guy with a 427 BBC (not sure of the physical size of an olds 455, is it bigger or smaller?) in a 1997 Camaro. There is not much left up front except the frame. I would expect to have to do some cutting.

actually im not sure if it is larger or smaller than the 427, i would assume smaller, because the 455's were considered to be "midblocks" neither small or big blocks..

I guess the 427 and the 455's are the same block, just that the 455 has a 4.025 standard bore.. if i remember right. Does anyone have any pictures of LT1's with big/mid blocks in them? i would like to see how much cutting i am looking at here before i go and abandon my 95 all together and jump back to a 3rd gen. thanks

A couple of years ago John Moss and his crew,(of GM's special vehicle dept) built a '94 Z28 with a 725 hp 454 ZL1 motor. He said it went in pretty easy. Do an internet search for John Moss's ZL1 Camaro.

Yeah, it went in pretty easy after the shock towers were completely refabbed to allow room for the wider engine.

A Chevy 427/454BBC and an Olds 455 are two completely different engines. A friend of mine has a 462 Olds in a 2nd Gen.

Here is a link to a 4th Gen with a 454 Chevy BBC in it:

Says right in the link... this engine was used in the 1st Gen Camaros. It's basically an aluminum BBC, so it would fit in a 4th Gen about the same as the 454BBC shown in the link above.

If you mean the ZL1 built on the 4th Gen by GMMG , no that uses a Z06 engine.

Still not clear who "they" are.... or what version of the ZL1 (ZL-1) you are even talking about.

The 1st Gen Camaros had the "original" ZL-1 aluminum BBC in them. They were factory rated at 425HP, but were probably closer to 600HP (remember, 1969 "HP" is not the same as our current "SAE net" HP).

Or.... how about the 770HP "ZL1" 4th Gen. 572 cubic inch, based on a Donovan aluminum block.

Yet another ZL1 4th Gen

Let me know if I'm getting close......

honestly, you have a nice motor there and it would probably cost you far more to make it fit in your camaro as it would just to pick up a rolling chassis of an older Cutlass or something, and a LOT less work there. If your interested in spending lots of cash to do it and have something original though, go for it! In general I like to see engines that match up with the brand of car, but something really neat is always nice (the GN powered A/C Cobra was neat ) I'd probably go out and see if I could pick up an old stationwagon, throw that thing in it and scare the wee out of the local Mustang boys
