I know a guy with 94 z and supposedly slp told him that these cars have to have the egr valves and you will get back knock retard without it.Anyone have proof this isn't so.Or do you have to be able to tune the car richer for example to compensate for the egr not injecting recyled exhaust gas.

No, you just have to have the computer retuned so it won't throw SES lights when it can't activate the EGR system. Other than that, the engine will run fine and the engine bay will look cleaner.

The EGR is only active at part throttle not at WOT so it does not hurt power, and no you can't tune it rich because the pcm always brings the cruise mix back to 14.7. EGR is not some evil emmisions thing robbing your car of 20hp. You can program it out which will involve the timing tables so it doesn't ping(which is what the EGR prevents) and turning off the CEL. But exect ZERO gains in anything from this. Once he does a bigger cam then deleteing the EGR makes sense since a bigger cam will self egr making the valve redundant.

The primary purpose of EGR is to reduce the formation of the pollutant "oxides of nitrogen" (NOx). It also offers the secondary benefit of reducing the possibility of knock when the engine is operating at conditions that produce NOx... but this is primarilly when "lugging" the engine... too much throttle at too low an RPM. I doubt any serious LT1 driver even operates his car under these conditions.

There is really no reason to remove EGR... it isn't hurting anything, and may actually help under some circumstances. But you aren't likely to see the sudden occurence of mass knock retard if you do delete EGR.
