Wierd intake question, please help.

I just changed my rockers, springs, lifters, etc...
Well after I got the whole engine put back together I found a part that I forgot to put back. It is the little oil pan looking thing that bolts onto the bottom of the intake manifold. What exactly does this thing do? Do I need to put it back on? I don't want to remove the intake after I just put it on...
Thanks for your help.

that sits on the lifters and kinda guides them and holds them in place. I prolly would put it back on...lets see what some other people have to say

Negative.

It's a heat shield. You don't NEED it, but it will keep excess heat from the lifter valley in the lifter valley, and not heatsoak the plenum. Those guys who run sneaky hidden nitrous systems under the manifold do away with it.

Thank you so much. I really didn't want to rip the manifold off again!
