why use a thermostat?

why use a thermostat?

why not just take it out???

i mean with a 160 thermo, ure opening it up in about 5 mins of driving, and it probably wont close til u stop driving anyways...

whats the point of having one>?

the vehicle will run hot without a t-stat on a lt1, since the t-stat closes a port beneath it to prevent recirculating the heated coolant

You can cut apart a stock thermostat so that it opens more fully and yet doesnt allow the hot coolant to come back up

In real basic terms the stat "slows" the coolent flow allowing the heat to transfer into the coolent better. So without a stat the coolent doesn't really get the heatsoak that it should to properly cool the engine. Hope this helps.

The thermostat performs 2 functions, first it allows the engine to come up to operating temperature sooner (good for the engine as the oil flows better and combustion is more efficient at operating temperature). Secondly, as described above, it partially restricts the flow of coolant to allow for proper heat exchange to occur in the radiator. Without the thermostat you would run hotter.
