Post SLP 160 thermostat no good?

Is it true that an SLP 160 thermostat is no good since it lowers the engines temperature below the ideal temperature of 178 as someone on the message board informed me? I live in south florida and its very hot almost all the time so I thought the thermostat would keep the engine safer. Also, I heard that even with a 160 thermostat the engine still runs around 180-185. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Wink

I was looking at all this my self. the stock stat starts to open at 188 and will be full open at 206. To get this info i looked in my 2002 sevice manual. Awsome book to have. I know this is not al the info you asked for but maybe it will help you some.

With my 160-stat and stock tuning my car runs I would estimate around 190, if I get stuck in traffic though it goes back up to 210, once I get driving again it comes back down, never seen it below that.

Now if you alter your fan settings to kick on at 160 instead of 200-210 like stock settings are you will probably be lower than 180, when I get mine programed I think i'm gonna have my fans turn on at 185

Thumbs down

IF you car is runing at 190 and you fans turn on around 160 or under your running temp i would think that your fans are always going to be on. IF your runing temp is 190. you should have you fans trun on at just a little above that mark to keep you at 190 . if you trying to make power by lowering temp you should look at truning you fans on by a switch. and get a better radiator. But this is just what i think.
