Why is my car running like crap after taking off the MSD???????

I just sold my MSD and removed it from my car. Now while I'm driving in mid day temp's I'll get a mis fire type of feel between 2000 and 3000 rpm. If i drop it down into 3rd it feels normal. I think it has something to do with the hotter plugs that were installed with the msd. They are rapid fire plugs that are 1 heat range hotter than stock. What else can it be? Whats the best plug to go with when going back to stock?

Re: Why is my car running like crap after taking off the MSD???????

Now it's worse!!!! I was pulling in and all of the sudden the car started misfiring as sson as I touch the gas. And now it making a taping sound and misfiring only when you give it gas. It idle's normally. The taping sounds like the sound you get when you put crappy gas in. as the car gets hotter the sound gets worse. I'm hoping that this is just a spark plug problem. It all started as soon as I pulled the MSD box off. Any suggestions??? Please help Ya'll

There's a remote possibility you may have a huge gap on the plugs and the stock ignition can't fire them, while the MSD box could. I've seen that happen.

Why did you use a hotter than stock plug? All that will achieve is rapid burning (larger gap) of the electrodes.

Can't say that's definitely it, since you now have some sort of tapping noise, but it might be worth pulling a few plugs to check.

I've heard of the boxes masking what would otherwise be a failed arc. (increased voltage from the MSD gives the arc enough power to jump the gap, but when removed, the oem spark isn't powerful enough to make the distance).

But to me it sounds like you may have goofed something up when you took it off. Just thinking out loud...

I wonder if the PCM pulled some timing to adjust for the MSD and hasn't added it back yet. That may not make any sense... but you may reset the PCM just to be sure.

I went with a hotter plug cause I was told they work better with the MSD. I was thinking about grabbin a set of TR55's and praying that it fixes the problem. Should I reset my PCM? How do I do that and why? Just curious.

to reset the comp, take off your neg. batt cable and leave it off for a while....did you do anything besides put the stock coil back in?...just go over all the plug wires and push on them, if any of them click that is more than likely your problem

The PCM has nothing to "adapt" to with the MSD box. It doesn't know its there. No need to "clear" the PCM. But if you want to, pull the "PCM BAT" fuse (key off) for 30 seconds. That way you don't lose you radio/security code.

Re: Why is my car running like crap after taking off the MSD???????

This morning I cleared the PCM just to see if anything changes. I started it cold and it felt great. Drove about 2 miles and then it started spuderin again. DAMN!!!DAMN!!DAMN!!! It definatly feels like a timming issue. It doesn't do it when it's cold. If your driving and very slowly accelerate It won't spuder at all. If you give it a little to much gas it spuders and tap's. What would have control of the timming of the engine? What would be effected by the engine heating up and causeing it to lose timming if too much gas is applied? What of these if any would be effected or damaged by removing the MSD, or running a plug that was gapped at 65 instead of 50? Bad coil, Bad Opti, Bad knock Module, some kind of misc sensor on the engine? Thanks for all the info so far Ya'll.

Check the wire off your coil? Maybe its something as simple as it being loose/corroded?
Sounds like spark not jumping right.. Pop the hood open in a pitch black garage and look for arcing. If your plugs are not getting enough spark it has to be jumping somewhere else instead... you may be able to find out where in the dark. Look around the stock coil, and wires to each plug.
