Why does it take 5 seconds to turn over?
Why does it take 5 seconds to turn over?
Exactly as the thread title says. It takes my car about 5-10 seconds to start. When i first got the car and didn't get the opti wet it would start up in 1-2 seconds, but then i got it wet and it dried out and i thought everything was ok. But now it takes 5 to 10 seconds to start, could it be because i got the opti wet or something else?
Re: Why does it take 5 seconds to turn over?
How's your battery look? If the terminals are corroded that will hurt the starting. Maybe needs a tune up, fouled plugs, bad wire, that opti, fuel pump, fuel filter, injectors, etc. It could be a ton of things. I would try the battery first, then move to the ignition, but if the opti was bad you would notice it after it starts too.
Re: Why does it take 5 seconds to turn over?
Yeah check the fuel pressure w/ vacuum line on and off the regulator, check to see if it drops after the engine turns off. Check the ignition system as well. Those are the two most common things.
Re: Why does it take 5 seconds to turn over?
Sounds like the opti is on its way out. TransAmGT94's car took about 4 tries for it to start right before the opti quit. If it's not that, it's probably a weak fuel pump.

Re: Why does it take 5 seconds to turn over?
I have been experience the same problem as well. My fuel pressure is fine as well as the starter, ignition, and battery-I have taken it to several mechanics and none have seem to find the answer. I have encountered this problem for about a year now and it hasnt got any better or worse which is odd but i have learned just to tolerate it
Re: Why does it take 5 seconds to turn over?
I get in and turn the key to the position right before start and let the pump prime the system, you should hear kind of a whine and then a click when it's done, then I start the car and usually fires right up. If it still has trouble starting could be your coil or something fuel related like someone else said.

Re: Why does it take 5 seconds to turn over?
I usually get in and turn it to accessories and wait a couple seconds then start it, and it still takes a few turn overs to start. It runs fine and like it's brand new, but just takes a while to start and it sounds hard on the engine. I know my thirdgen camaro had the same thing when i had it, turn the key to accessories, wait, start, give it 5 seconds and boom, it runs like new. kind of odd...
