Many aftermarket cams for most engines feature more lift and duration on the exahust lobe. This is known as a split pattern cam. It's designed to help overcome the exhaust flow defecinies in most cylinder head designs. (Notice that the exhaust valves and runners are smaller than the intake). Keeping the exhaust valves open longer also assists the scavaging effect of the exhuast pulling air /fuel in the intake valves.

It's debateable that split pattern are better than single pattern (same lift duration for exahust/intake). I think the consensus of opinions is that for stock or mildly ported heads, a split pattern is better, but for hi flow aftermarket heads, a single pattern is better.

Cam experts are welcome to enter their arguements or comments here!!!!
