Question Why aren't longtubes emissions legal?

I was looking around and considering lt's and hooker exhaust and a custom y pipe for exhaust mods. But I am not sure what emissions testing we have in louisiana so i dont know if I'll have to stear clear lt's. What causes the lt's to be emmissions illegal? i guess i just need a better concept of cats and exhaust, if somebody has a site explaining all of this it would help.
I pretty much ruled out the borla after finding out it would be an extra $95 for my dual cat car but from the reviews of hooker, i'm thinking about driving to baton rouge and visiting thunder racing and go visit my sister up at lsu.
also, does anybody have some sound clips of hooker exhaust?
thanks

None of them carry an emissions certification and by law they simply can't. It is illegal to move the location of the catalytic converter, or change the number of them.

On your '97, the longtubes will physically move the cats back towards the rear of the car.

I have some on my site. click on the installs page and the click on the hooker longtubes link on the left. Scroll to the bottom of the page. The sounds are with the stock cam also. Also, they aren't legal, because they are moving the stock location of the cat. Also, somethinga bout the distance between the exahust manifold and where the cat would be on the longtubes would prevent the cat from getting hot tnough to catalyse the exhaust gases properly. With regular long tubes, they don't have ANY cats, so there's no way it could be emissions legal. You might be able to pass a sniff test by welding in 2 cats to the end of the longtubes as long as you have a great tune and a smaller cam.

**edit. you might have to right click > save as on the sound clips. PS they were recorded with my digital camera so the sound quality isn't that great. Some videos are on my video page also that have sound.

I doubt you could, as the Hooker CARB compliance 'sticker' is a stamped metal tag that is attached to the #1 primary tube.

You can kinda' see it in this pic of the Hooker LT1 shorties:

one thing to cosider is that hardly any inspection station actually looks for teh cert tag and i have never heard of them pulling out a diagram to make sure the cats are in teh factory location.
here in new jersey many of my friends have gotten away with teh appearance of smog equipment for years. wrapping a cat shell around a piece of pipe, tach welding teh AIR tubes onto teh out side of headers, removing the emissions sticker from under teh hood or finding an older oen that more closely resembles what is actually on the car are all good tricks. then all you do is tuen it to pass teh sniffer for a day adn you are good to go

later

Thumbs up

In Texas they dont know what their looking for, my buddy has all the smog stuff on his long tubes, one cat is in the stock place, he has duals, his car passed, he also has a 305 cam and heads. Our cars are so damn low, they really dont know. As long as you have it.

Haha... my friend Louis (G2 LS1) did the same thing. He just welded a single cat shell on his Y-pipe and he passed visual no problem.
