Thanks for all the replies, keep them coming. I think someone linked this post to the Corvette forum. I'll have to get with the Impala folks also.

Thanks again!!!

I would definitely be in for one.
Message to MSD: ask ANY LT1 owner that knows anything about his engine and he will say $#%# that Opti-spark! I'm on my second one w/ 54k on my 94 and I think this one is going now too. I really think the demand would be there!!!! Build it, we will buy!!!!

I am definitely interested. Electromotive is also in the process of getting something together but they are talking 6 months. This opti crap has been around for a decade and no one has come up with a reasonable replacement. Time for someone to sh*& or get off the pot. A few people have started saying the opti can't even handle the extra voltage the after market ignition systems put out. The replacement cost may be more but the time and effort you need to keep replacing it would be worth it alone. I still can't believe it has taken this long and that Elecromotive had something and didn't advance on it.

Here is one more vote.

count me in too.

what a great web site this is. And the people that come here.
MSD could build it and sell tons of them with nothing more than an advertisment on CamaroZ28.com!

I'd buy one in a second. I think I'm about to go on Opti #3. If they make it, they should make it like a marine part(water resistant).

I'll take two! Seems like they could come up with an add-on crank position sensor and a tiny computer to send out a low res pulse to some coil packs...

I think my Opti is on it's last leg, so i would love to get a durable replacement. If they could get there DIS system to interface with the stock computer, I am sure people would really buy. They already have the coil packs and the DIS box, we just need some way to trigger it. That would be cool.

Here comes the corvetteforum!!!

This has been a hot topic over here for some time.

Several of you have mentioned the needs of the low res signal for the fuel injection. And that is correct.

The "opti" part of Optispark is from Mitusbishi. Yup. The part itself is indestructable. The problem is with the bearings that carry the shafts. and the associated moving parts.

So that leaves us with needing the opti part and a piggy back system that will take the ignition signal and send it to the appropriate coil pack.

It seems to me the coil packs can be mounted to the studs on the valve covers. which in turn leaves us with rather short plug wires... perhaps the same wires used on the C5???

There are millions of LT1s floating around... Vettes, Camaro, Firebird, Caprice, Impala, Roadmaster, DeVille....

<font face="Verdana, Arial" size="2">Originally posted by Injuneer 94FormM6:
One of the problems of producing a replacement distributor for the LT1 is the fact that no matter what you do, as long as you use the stock PCM to manage the engine, you need the low resolution pulse from the Opti. Without that signal, the PCM can not fire the injectors and shuts down the fuel system.

Go to the MSD website and look at their new "CPC" ignition system... possible to run 8 direct fire coils, with a standalone timing computer. Problem is, the CPC system needs a crank and cam position signal. It gets this by replacing a conventional distributor with a "plug"... essentially a replacement for the shaft of the original distributor with a cam postion sensor in it. What you need to convince MSD to do is to make a "plug" for the LT1 that can be inserted through a hole drilled in the back of the intake, and would have to provide a cam sensor signal that could be translated into the low res pulse for the Opti.... something I don't think would be that hard to do.

i just recently put my lt1 engine back together, in doing so i broke the plastic shaft (dont know the name of the peice) where the distributer would go on a convention small block chevy. i'm it has a gear and sits on the camshaft, i think it may hold the oil pump in somehow. anyway , what if msd could make somethng to for this. you'd have to take the intake manifold off to install, but you wouldnt have to drill any holes through the intake. ust a thought.........tommy
