Trickflow and AFR make nice aftermarket heads for the LT1.

I run 11.50s at 118 with stock casting LT1 heads CNC/hand ported with 2.00/1.56 valves done by LPE and E.B. Porting...

Mike Harris in Dayton, OH can port your stock castings for you and make them really work! He has the world's fastest hydraulic cammed LT1 iron headed Impala SS in the world! I know him personally and I can get you in touch with him.

Re: who makes decent heads for a lt1?

If you can afford bigger afr's 210,220,215rr than I would get them bare and have them ported by L.E.. If they are a little pricey than I would go with trickflows bare or lt4's bare and then sent to lloyd. There are many other aftermarket heads out there, the ones I listed are the ones I would buy. I am not sure what kind of numbers you looking to make or how much money you have to spend. good luck on whatever you decide.

The AFR's are pricey if you buy them decked out, but they are priced pretty close to the trickflows when you're talking bare casting to bare casting.
You just have a loooooooong lead time with the AFR's...

Another consideration is combustion chamber size when buying performance heads. The stock LT1/4s are 54cc's and you get 10.4 to 10.8, but several of the aftermarket heads (AFR excluded) have very large (66cc) chambers. So, you will lose a lot of compression if you also use the OEM type pistons and with the large chamber heads.

I just bought a set of AFR 195cc intake LT4s, with 58cc chambers, which is the smallest chamber they offer in that head. I plan to use a thin .026" Mr. Gasket head gasket to keep the compression at 10.5. For example; if I used the factory .051" head gasket along with the 58cc's, it would drop the compression down-to 9.9.

Something to think about when buying aftermarket LT performance heads.

Advanced Induction is in NC and could work your stock heads, not the cheapest option but might save you shipping costs. LE also has a solid reputation here.
Mike Harris like chrism400 mentioned is getting some amazing results too. There are a lot of good choices you could make these are just a few.

AFR: www.airflowresearch.com Quite a few shops carry AFR (I think Summit or Jegs may as well), so some research on your part will yeild the best price. Check out the vendor index page and see what you come up with.

That's a good number for some worked LT1 heads, but aftermarket may get a little higher.

With a low budget like that you will get further putting the money into the stock castings.
People are FAR too quick to ASSume they need to replace them.

Stay away from Trickflow heads unless you plan to run forced induction.
