LT1

How can you not love this engine/car? True stock for stock an ls1 will beat you but big deal! while he paid between 15-20000 plus for his car you paid under ten grand and have the extra ten to put in it. If you put the same money back in it would take one hell of a modified ls1 monster to beat you. Trust me i race 2 modified ls1's all the time. the mildly modified one i can eat pretty easily the other with cam headers full bolt ons etc i can rip him off the line and hang with him past 100 by 115 he is about a car ahead.

To answer the question Im not jumping ship Lt1

I also have a 2000 SS obviously with an LS1 and it almost makes me wish I would of done that one instead of the 97.

I was checking out your car in your post about the 4l80 in advanced tech. Not trying to pick apart your exhaust choices or anything but it looked to me like you were still running the stock dual cat y-pipe? I assume that your SLP headers are the dual cats then, I didnt see anything about a catback either. That kind of exhaust setup has got to be a pretty big restriction on your S/C'd 383. Maybe that's changed, just curious though.

I've had 3 LT1 engines in two Z28s.
The last Z28 which I still have came with a bad LT1 which was the only LT1 I DID NOT like. So I went ahead and bought my 3rd LT1 to swap in place of the 2nd...
About this second car, I can only say I've spent more time working on it than driving it... and I don't regret one moment of it. So I guess the answer is yes, I like my LT1.

I had a 96 ta and 97 taws6 with quite a few bolt ons.I then got a 99 taws6 and have it pretty modded and just bought a 96 z28 vert for wife but I drive it too.I have done some mild mods to the vert.
Things I like about the lt1..nicer engine sound, nicer engine compartment.More snap around town altough the crappy 2.73 I have in the vert right now really neuter down the usually killer low end lt1 grunt. Some parts for the lt1 are cheaper than ls1 parts.
Things I dont' like..lt1 optipuke..what a stupid design but good news is now there are replacement systems..likely get a delteq soon. And the intake manifold leak problem.97 had it twice the 96 doesn' t seem to have it yet.

My ls1 well faster out of the box, responds good to mods.I like the looks of my 99taws6 better than my 97taws6.Like the front, hood, the side air extractors, the honeycomb taillights.Better brakes on the ls1.No optipuke,no intake manifold leaks. It does have the ls1 piston slap in morning when cold. And the six speed trannies don't think were as good as the lt1 t56 and the ls1 clutch system is not as good as the lt1 clutches.

Also my lt1 don't impress with stock gears as much as my m6 lt1 ta did around town..course the 4.10 I put in the 97 ta didn't hurt either.

I have found all my fourth gens to be pretty very reliable and fairly rattle free. You want to talk rattle we can talk about my 80 trans am.

Anyway so in short the lt1 and the ls1 are both great engines but so is my pontiac 400 ,etc.Any car can be made as fast or faster than any other just takes smarts and sometimes money.

My 1200 buck 80 ta with rebuilt motor and mild mods runs high 13s.My 96 vert with minor mods runs high 13s.My 99 with lots of mods runs low 13s.Now these times are all on street tires. With
race type rubber some would be much faster. The ls1 has massive traction problems.

Anyway enjoy your rides and be glad they have opti replacement systems for our lt1s now..!!

LT1 with less than 100k miles, ~$6,500
NX 150hp Wet Nitrous kit, ~$500

Estimated HP: 275+150 = 425hp...

Total Cost: ~$7,000

LS1 with less than 100k miles, ~$8,500

Estimated HP: 350hp (generous estimate)...

Now what was it you were saying about it costing a lot for an LT1 to go fast?

I love my LT1 its all the little things that break that arent related to the motor that are startin to bug me... Like that damn 4L60E and that 10 bolt rearend... i want to meat the moron who said hey, lets take the biggest piece of junk tranny we can, hook it up to a 275 HP motor and then connect the real wheels to a rearend out of a small v-6 powered truck.

I don't know about most people here, but I don't regard nitrous as the solution to making a car faster, since you're not going to have that power available to you all the time on the street. Once the bottle runs out, you're back to running slower again. And how many people want to pay $50 (or whatever it costs now) to fill the bottle up again after every 10 full throttle runs? Not me.

Sure, nitrous is a good way to lower your ETs at the strip, but it's not a feasable mod if someone wants to have more horsepower available to them all the time in their daily commute. How many people with nitrous hooked up on their LT1 actually leave the bottle turned on all the time too? Probably not too many (it's dangerous to drive around like that)

That's what remote openers are for!
And spray is a legitimate way to add power. Just less expensive then heads/cam or s/c

Even with a remote opener, it's still not a good mod for someone who loves to drive fast a lot. In my driving, I go full throttle at least 20 times a day, if not more. I'd run out of nitrous in no time. I'd have to carry a trunk full of bottles.

Trick is to only use it when you need it. If you are getting in 20 races a day, you might want to rethink your driving habits.

Peronsally, I've got a couple of spare bottles and dont remember the last time time my car had a completely MT bottle.

IMO, anything you can do to the car to make it faster is legit...

Sure nitrous is tempory, but then again, so is gasoline... by comparision, nitrous seems to be getting cheaper lately

And to stay on topic, I'm keeping the LT1 - plenty of parts available to make the old dinosaur run just about any number a street car would care to run...

Lloyd's stage I heads/cam package is what... $1,100? A GOOD nitrous system will run about a grand, then fill the bottle 3 times..... The heads/cam solution sounds a bit nicer now doesn't it? Only thing is that with nitrous the car drives and runs like stock when you aren't spraying, but you have to deal with that cam all of the time.
