Re: White smoke pouring out of exhaust!

$1000 for a complete rebuild? Does that include parts? What parts are you thinking about?

If you give some more info I can help you better.

Re: White smoke pouring out of exhaust!

He's gonna do all of that for only an additional $1000. huh? I think most shops would probably charge you that much or more just on labor charges for removing and installing the motor! If you don't plan on installing any performance parts on your rebuild, I'd look into purchasing a new short block...atleast that will come with some kind of warranty. If I were you, I'd sit down with my mechanic and find out what parts he plans on using. How long have you been using this particular mechanic?

Re: White smoke pouring out of exhaust!

Well as far as knowing hes been a personal friend of someone i know ofr a looong itme, seems like a real good guy. basically everything inside the motor will be replaced, only for a grand becuase i gave the guy 1400 to replace my top end heads gasjkets and do the plugs for me. and the car didnt work so he felt bad. anyway hes a good guy and only charging me half price for parts. BTW money is an issue right now so no serious aftermarket for me Thanks guys Cory

Well, all in all.. its not to bad of a situation. Yeah it might have been a little unexpected, but the damn motor had 140k miles on it so its not like it couldn't use some R&R anyways. I would at least put a cam in it while its out of the car and torn apart. Then it would sound ALOT better and give you a little extra power.

Re: White smoke pouring out of exhaust!

id go with an xe 224/230.. prolly see 30whp increase depending on if you have headers. Good cam if your not planning on going hog wild like some here and just want a good proformance car. CC305 or the hotcam are good choices but I hear alot of people wishing they went a little bit bigger.. Just my .02

Good Luck,
Craig

Now you're talkin! I did the same thing, and let me tell ya, you will not be dissapointed

I got my kit from a respectable seller on eBay for around $1700 that included:
forged Eagle 3.75" crank
forged Eagle h-beam 6" rods
forged SRP lightweight pistons -16cc dish
Clevitte 77-H main, rod, and cam bearings
ARP L19 bolts
included, the kit was internally balanced

This setup is good for 1000HP!

You could go cheaper, you do not need a forged crank and can prob save $500 overall and still be using quality parts. I'm planning to throw a blower in a year to make close to 800RWHP, so I opted for the expensive stuff

Good Luck

Re: White smoke pouring out of exhaust!

I've always heard that you should pull the pan and inspect bearings anytime there has been water in the oil. I guess this bears it out one more time. I wish I'd had that advice on my old GTO 389-same thing happened to me only it was about a year down the line and in another state.
