Whining noise whenever I turn sharp to the left or the right.

I keep hearing this whining noise coming from, well I think it's the rear, whenever I make a sharp turn left, or right. Also hear it sometimes when I back up. Any ideas? Hope it's not rearend going.

Yep, I would check the power steering fluid.

It could be your rearend, mine made some whining noise when I made real sharp turns(either way) while going slow. mine turned out to be a bad carrier bearing. New bearings and new fluid the noise was gone. Hope this helps.

I thought that it could be low on power steering fluid too, that was the first thing that I checked. It's full. Darins94TransAmGT is describing the exact same problem that I have. It only seems to make the noise whenever I'm making a sharp turn while going slow. What makes a carrier bearing go bad? Is it normal for a car with 112k? How much work is required to change it? Should I just go ahead and replace the gears while I'm at it? I have a set of 3.42's in the garage and I've been looking for a good reason to put them in.

No, I haven't changed the diff. fluid. The previous owner did a few months before I bought it and it was done at a GM dealership. I bought the car with 96K, it now has 112k. The noise started happening at about 110k.

I'll try that next, about a month ago I checked the fluid and it was full. Any types you recomend? I heard the Royal purple Synthetic was pretty good and you don't have to put the additive in it.

mine went bad at 119K miles Its not that hard to replace the bearings. If you have ever had a rear apart. Once you get the carrier out just take it to your local NAPA and buy new bearings and have them press them on. As for what makes em go bad just time and wear and tear. If you decide to chang gears that is alittle harder.

My 98 Z28 had a similiar problem a few years back. It was the pinion seal. It was replaced at the dealership under warranty and it's been fine ever since.
