I've recently had trouble with blowing coolant out of the overflow. I replaced the rad cap and still the same thing happens. Today I took out the thermostat and boiled it in some water to see if it was opening. It only opens maybe a 1/16 of an inch. I figured this is not far enough and I need a new thermostat. It has a 160* in it now and I can't find one anywhere that is not a special order.

Where do I get a 160* thermostat?

 

You have to find an F-Body parts source that carries the Hypertech 160* stat.

 

whatever you do DO NOT BUY ONE FOR AUTOZONE. ITs not the right kind.

Thanks for the pictures. It definately is not opening all the way. That explaines why it was running hotter then normal and blowing out coolant.

Money is really tight right now. Do you think using a standard 180* for a while would mess anything up? I have a madz28 tune for the 160* and the fans come on at 180 and 190.

 

I got one from Kragens a few weeks ago, and it was incorrect as above stated.

So as long as I had the old one(stock 180) out, I drilled a couple of .25 holes in the surface of it. Before I did this, the car was running 190-195 (normal) Now it runs about 170, getting close to 180-185 on very hot days. It also bleeds WAY easier, it was worth it for that alone.

why can't u run it without the t-stat all together?

 

If your coolant flows too fast, it doesn't have enough time in the radiator to cool off.
