Where has all my oil gone???
Where has all my oil gone???
My engine has been rebuilt from the bottom up with less than 5k on it. I use Mobil 1 in it and changed the oil about 750 - 1000 miles ago. I checked it today and it is down a quart!!!!!! It doesn't leak anywhere. I have cardboard under the car in my garage and it completely dry and the underside of the enging, etc. is completely dry as well. There is zero, notta, smoke, at any stage in the rpm range, coming out of the exhaust. I have been battling with an exhaust smell for some time now so I had a new system installed from the "Y" pipe back and it seems to have helped but it is still somewhat evident. Could it be lost to "blowby"??? I don't know that much about blowby! Any suggestions!
I've run into this before on new engines that are started off on synthetic oil. The lubrication is so good that ring seating doesn't really take place until the 12-15K mark. Oil consumption in about the amount you describe is about average. Expect it to consume less and less oil as it wears in if this is indeed the case.
Is there an oil film on your back bumper? You might have a friend follow you when you get on it and watch for blue smoke (oil) out the tailpipe. Reving it in neutral in the driveway and checking for oil out the tailpipe is not the same as under load.
Hey I just had my engine rebuilt about a year ago and had the exact same thing happen. I did Dino oil the first 3000 mi and then mobil one since. The first and second mobil changes showed it down a quart or so too! Finally it's stopped eating the oil now so I think it's settled down.
