Where did I go wrong?

Replaced opti, cap and rotor, front crank seal, and distributor seal. Hooked up intake just for startup.

I have not put back in the WP or cooling fans.

Wanted to test the opti/cap and rotor install before putting everything back in. Started it up, seems to idle ok. Tapped the throttle and it stalls, let go of the gas before it completely dies and it goes right back to idling. Same thing occurs after two or three tries. So I put back on the belt just to see if maybe it wasn't getting enough power. Nope same thing. Opti was put onto dowel properly, I'm pretty sure I hooked up the wires all the right way. So where do you think I went wrong?

What is your fuel pressure at idle and when you give it gas?
check the basics first!

Before the install it didn't do what its doing now. I can't imagine anything has changed in a few days. I can't check fuel pressure tonight but what else you think may have occurred that I could check.

Edit: When ignition is turned on but not the motor, the fuel pump does turn on for the usual 2 sec. I am not getting any codes except 15 and thats low coolant sensor.

Is your intake all back together and completly sealed along with your MAF being pluged in? If not, then it won't respond correctly when you blip the throttle.

Yup everything is plugged in and sealed up. Triple checked all the connections, they are all completely plugged in and the wires looked intact.

Is it possible to install the rotor "upside down" and the motor to still run? I'm pretty sure I installed it correctly but its a possibility.

I never did a start before hooking thing up because i always get some issue that will not happen when it all back together. It almost sounds like an install problem or something is unplug like a vacuum hose or whatever. Did the rotor position look like it was in the exact position as it was with the old unit. I have seen several posts where the unit was chewed up bad and ruined do to the cam being position wrong and shaving off some of it.

The dowel was definitely in the right hole of the "3 leaf clover" on the unit I made sure to mark everything up as I was putting it in so I could be 100% sure it was on the right one. If its any help, the cam was in the 3 o'clock position at install. So I believe that's piston 6, where should the rotor be pointing if the cam dowel is at 3 o'clock?

You really should try this with the water pump installed and a water hose in the inlet of the water pump so that you have some fluid in the cooling system, youl'l develop hot spots rather quickly. Which brings me to my question, how long did you idle it before tapping the throttle? If it was more than 30 seconds you might be getting sever detonation though there should be some symptom other than it just stalling out.

No more than 5 seconds idling then 5 seconds of trying to blip the throttle. No more than 10-15 seconds of total runtime. I wouldn't let it go further then that without the cooling system on.

You sure you have the intake elbow seated on the TB correctly? That funky oval shape doesn't easily lend itself to go on without a lot of fuss. That and the intake silencer on? If it's sucking air post-MAF that could be the source of your problem.
