What's the point of a windage tray?

It seems under high rpm's, wouldn't you want the oil in the oil pan rather than sitting on top of the windage tray?

Windage trays keeps the oil from foaming.

from foaming wtf? since when does oil foam?

its to keep oil from splashing up onto the crank, causing you to loose HP! it wont hurt anything to NOT have one! you might loose like 2HP thats about it

I am no expert and I am sure others here can answer better that I. But my understanding is that at high rpm's the oil can "wrap" around the crank and is slung off. You want to scrap the oil off the crank and then keep it in the pan so the oil pump can pick it up. The crank can whip the oil so much that air bubbles form in the oil, which does your bearings no favors, plus the oil "drags" the crank and takes away a few horsepower.

The best set up is to use a dry sump lubrication system in which external scavenger pumps suck all the oil out of the pan and pump it back into the engine externally. But this is very expensive and for street use a normal wet sump system is more than adequate.

It also helps with the transfer/movement of air inside the crankcase as the rotating assembly does its thing.

Oil can foam, at 5000+RPM you'd be surprised at all the things motor oil CAN do.

Technically, oil doesn't "foam." But it can become "arreated."

There is a difference
