Whats going on with my cooling system help!!!!!!
Hi guys, I have 1994 Camaro Z28 Automatic. When I bought it back in 04 the tempurature was about half way. So I went to my local speed shop and I bought the best water pump they had I forgot the name but remember it started with an A and I also bought a new thermostat. It ran perfect at a little lower than a quater where its should be, then a week later it went half way. I went through so many water pumps and thermostats trying to keep it a lower than a quater. So I replaced everything a new radiator, water pump, thermostat and it did the same thing. It will do it when like if i were in street traffic or just driving around, but on the freeway it will go down a little. I know how the car is sopposed to be at less then a quater and then how it feels when it goes half way or even more, it doesn't have that power like when it a little less than a quater. I checked the fans at an idle, they came on so I know it wasn't the fans. And the fans come on when the tempurature gets really high so I know the fans work. And every three days I have to give it a little water like 4'' in the radiator, I would like to know what that is. I just want to get in and drive it anywhere long distance locally anywhere without those problems. I was thinking about getting a stock water pump from GM and or getting electrical fans that stay on when you turn the car on and let them run the whole time the car is on. Thanks Guys.

If you are losing water, you need to find out where it is going. Rent or buy a pressure tester to help you. Other than that and the issues it might be causing, I think you have been chasing a non-existent problem. Most of what you say the cooling system is doing is normal.
You don't want to have your fans running all the time. It is totally unnecessary, wasteful and only a band aid for your water loss problem.
Here is some info on how the cooling system functions.

The best water pump they had? You have limited choices. You can get a new stock replacement from GM or you can get a rebuilt one from a bunch of manufacturers, You can get an electric one and there you have a couple of choices...
Anyway, your thinking that the reading should be in the first quarter on the gauge is incorrect. With the stock thermostat, the normal operating temperature is right about mid gauge and the fans don't even come on until you get to about 3/4 range. You could change the radiator and thermostats twenty times a day and still get this response.
To run cooler you need to do a few things. One, you get a lower temperature thermostat...160F is the one of choice for most people. Then you get the fans programmed to come on at a lower temperature. These changes, by themselves will lower the temperature and result in more emissions and less power. To gain power you have to get the tuner to adjust timing, etc, to take advantage of the cooler temps.
To address your low coolant situation, first make sure the hose running from the radiator to the overflow tank is intact and that the tank itself holds coolant. The coolant in the car expands and some is pushed into that tank. When the engine cools it is drawn back into the radiator, keeping it full. If the hose is missing or cracked, or the tank itself is cracked, that coolant is lost and you have to refill it...like you've found. The coolant recovery tank doubles as the battery mount so you have to remove the battery to get to the hose and tank..
Good luck!
