What's the first to go in the bottom end?

Say due to revving too high or too much nitrous? Or either or.

say you are upgrading the bottom end to handle high rpms, what should you upgrade?

I am no expert but I would say

Lightweight crank, forged rods and forged pistons is the best way to go for Hi-Revving...why do u want to rev so high..if you dont mind me asking?

if on a budget, just get some high quality pistons and medium quality rods.

Probably the rods or pistons. How much were you planning on spraying BTW? A stock shortblock can handle a decent size shot assuming you have the "safety" devices installed as well.

Over revving a stock bottom end will spin a bearing.
Too much N20 (or a lack of safety equipment) will break pistons and bend rods.

No question about it, spinning a "rod bearing" is the number one failure with stock LT bottom-ends when you increase the RPM (cam & heads). A good set of ARP rod bolts can possibly prevent this problem, as the factory rod bolts are the cause of the problem and not the rods.

I wish I could put that in bronze at the top of the website.

We see it all too often, people put cams in their cars with high RPM peaks
then rev the stock bottom end beyond redline trying to make use of the power.
The next thing you know ... BANG ... spun bearing

Installing ARP bolts (and even better bearings) adds quite a bit to the cost of a H/C install.
But remember, having to repair a spun bearings adds more.

The cam I'm going to install likes higher RPMs and I'm going to be short shifting it until I build the bottom end.

As far as nitrous, I doubt I'd go above a 150 shot anyway. And I know the stock bottom end can handle it, but at a higher RPM it lessens it's ability.

I would agree on bearings though I have seen crappy porting/tuning result in individual lean cylinders and piston damage. People do not want to believe that was the case though.

I have seen a single piston cracked around the pin, my guess it is was overrev damage from an idiot driving an M6 car.
