TH400: completely different, larger, stronger, heavier 3-speed (no overdrive, top gear is 1:1). OEM on some GM cars from the 60's and 70's. It can fit on a 4th gen without much trouble.

4L60 and 4L60E are four speeds (they have an overdrive). The 4L60E is electronically controlled (by the PCM) and the 4L60 is not. 4L60E is still in use, and was used on 94+ 4th gens. The '93 used the non-electronic 4L60.

The TH400 can be made virtually "bullet proof" as an aftermarket unit. The stock TH400 was pretty darn strong as well. Even upgraded 4L60 and 4L60E's are prone to breakage under high hp/high traction situations, but the OD makes them much more pleasant street transmissions. Of course, you can add an aftermarket Gear Vendors overdrive unit to a TH400 for the best of both worlds. The only problem is a top-end TH400 costs ~$2,500 and the GV nearly the same. A $5,000 transmission on a car worth $15K might seem silly to some.

The advantage/disadvantage is that the 4l60e is controlled byt the computer for shifts and lockup.

4l60 you can shift yourself where as 4l60e doesnt like to be manually shifted.

LMAO on that one.

Listen to rskrause. Doc speaks the truth.

4L80E, which noone mentioned is basically a 400 with an overdrive gear added.

I was about to say that!

93s use the 4L60, its aparantley an updated version of the 700R4 that came to use in the 91-92 Third gen cars, what was updated? No one has ever given me a straight answer on this. They both are non electronic, hell even the speedo is still gear driven.

The reason incase you wondering about why 93 is a 4L60 and 94 in the 4L60E?

92-93 (Remember the LT1 made its debut in Vettes in 92, F-cars in 93 w/ the new gen) Any case 92-93 LT1s are what you call ECM, the computer controls the motor and nothing else.

In 94 when they went to MAF (Last MAF system was the 89 L98, LB9, in 90 they went to speed density) they decided to also switch to a PCM, which controls the entire powertrain, engine, trans and to a very limited extent your rear end with the ASR (Acceleration Slip Regulator(?) better known as traction control for those car optioned with it)

So thats why the 94 trannies are Electronic, no one asked but I know people wonder. 93s have a traction place in the gauge but no bulb since we dont have the system.

I think you're wrong on this part. I have seen my Low-Trac indicator light up a few times. Usually when the brakes lock up and the ABS kicks in. Never seen it during a burn out though. Wait a minute, I've never really done a BIG burn out, yet. But enough little ones. Tires are expensive.

They are basically the same, with one being an electronic version and the other not. It would be your preference on how you want to control it.
