WHATS THE BEST SCAN TOOL? 94z28

im getting tired of taking my 1994 camaro to the gm dealership to read stupid codes and spending 50-250 dollars to find out they dont know what the hell is going on with my car, i cant get them to tell me what codes my car is throwing, thats all i want, so whats the best way to get the codes? for an affordable price

Most auto parts stores have a code reader they will let you use for free. All they wanted was a drivers license and i just did it in the parking lot in 5 minutes. Can't get cheaper than that.

Actron and Autoxray both sell code readers and scan tools that will work with your car. Visit their sites and then check around for prices. Amazon.com, for one, has decent prices.

You can also read the codes, and vital PCM signs with the ScanMaster LT1. Great for full-time mounting/display on the dash.

I got the scanmaster and it tells you a lot of info. I wish the pcm read more sensors instead of them going straight to the guages, but oh well. Very useful as a tuning tool and can even log some data.

The only dash data that isn't in the PCM (and accessible with the ScanMaster) is the oil pressure and the fuel level. You can read RPM, MPH, system voltage and coolant directly with a scanner.

If you have a laptop, you can get a cable from akmcables and hook it up to the laptop. Thats what i use. You can also tune the computer and data log it with special software. Trying to remember how much my cable was... I think 90 shipped or something.

I bought a actron for my 94, it will cost you over 270 with obd1 cable, i took it back cause it seemed a waste,it gives some info but no adjustments, money better spent on software like the guys mentioned, auto zone cant scan you obd1 cause they use a cheaper actron
