What's the best LT header for a LT1?

What's the best LT header for a LT1?

I'm doing some research for a friend who is serving in Afganistan. I'll likely be doing the install also.

He has a 97 TA that has Greg Good ported heads, intake & a nice cam. He has shorties on there, but would like to step it up to a long tube, with race style merge collectors.

I'm looking for something with quality, that will be easy to install, and just as important, something that will perform!!

He is looking at spraying the car in the future, but right now is just looking at exhaust, from the headers back. Thanks.

coated pacesetters would be the choice for budget and ease of installation. LPP I think is name are a good affordable stainless header, you can find a link to them over on ls1tech.

Thanks. Budget is not a concern. He has already wasted time & $$ on some shorties, and want a power improvment that will be further complemented by his future nitrous mods.

The fact that they are stainless steel will also make them last a long time. Good luck and make sure you get some pics posted.

Honestly, most LT headers will perform similarly. If he is going with a lot of nitrous, he should take some time to pick a good cam for his setup and get it tuned.

the new design LPP's will be the best header for the money out there for LT1's, they are made out of 321 stainless steal which is the best grade for headers and is a better grade than any other header, even better than kooks, they are also stepped too. They're half the price of kooks headers and come with the y pipe unlike the kooks which you would still need to buy, but if you need to keep emisions hook ups them I would go for the kooks if there is no budget. here's the thread on ls1tech http://www.ls1tech.com/forums/lt1-lt...headers-y.html

2nd gen LPP headers or kooks.

Is he running a stock bottom end? He may not need a stepped header for a 350.

LPPs hands down best header out there as long as you dont need to pass emissions.
They are better than Kooks for less than half the price. Why do I say they are better?
Well they are made of the best SS you can get for exhaust(kooks isnt)
They have nice thick flanges(less warpage=less leaks)
oversize D-ports,
they are polished,
they are stepped 1 3/4-1 7/8,
they have High velocity collectors, with merge spike,
They fit just as well as Kooks stepped headers,
and they are also made in the USA.
Kooks $1400
LPP $550 shipped
Lots of guys are making great power with them too. Including me.
Stay away from PS unless you like rust.

I would say Kooks are the best, most readily available header for the LT1. If you're not in a hurry, and want stepped, non-emissions headers, the LPP's are essentially Kooks for less money.

Two(2) quick questions here. 1) Does anyone know what the "new design" changes are from the original design of the LPP's, and 2) how is spark plug access with these headers?

I can't get the plug out of cylinder 2. It's still an old plug as I forgot to pull it before installing the header on that side.

All others are pretty easy.

The new design I assume will fix the need to move the steering column and grind the k member.

So what I hear you saying is that one cannot change the #2 spark plug without removing and/or loosening the passenger side header with these headers, and they are NOT attempting to fix this problem with their "new design" revision.

Hey:former Lansing,Dewitt here, Oregon now. Anyhoo. I don't know the laws in MI re emissions, however, I do believe that the Feds say it is a no no to install any headers that move or delete the CATs. Just how much of an issue it is, I haven't a clue. Just giving you a heads up, since if it is an issue it might be a mistake to go through all the trouble and money just to get nailed. JMHO

No, there may be a way to do it, but I got antsy and continued on.
