what would too much oil look like?

OKay I have a 383 LT1 With a moroso Pan. The previous owner (my friend said he ran 8 quarts but he has a oil filter relocation kit and and big as HP filter). He ran moble 1 15-40

I am running 8 quarts of 15-40 Royal Purple with a stock filter.

Now i pulled my dipstick and there was a little gray at the top of the dipstick. I checked my oil seperator that was on the intake and it was full of gunk. I did just change the filter bc the old one wasnt giving my motor over 35psi.

Could these simptoms be from too much oil OR bc the filter pluged?

I am running 35ishPSI HOT idle, 60psi Crusing.
The motor runs strong and hard also.

Also I think im leaking a bit from the dipstick at the block (bc i didnt RTV it and have been moving it alot)

Any input aprreciated!

Need more info about the pan and what it can hold. With a stock pan and filter that would be way too much and probably why your catch can is full of crap.

Sorry pan is a Moroso 20205 pan. Filter is a stock size filter. Oil is 15W-40 Royal purple (8 quarts)

If the pan was installed with the correct oil pump pickup, you're way over-filled on oil. Just because they say the capacity is seven quarts doesn't necessarily mean you should put that much or more in it.

To provide a comparison, I run a Moroso 21239 pan with the matching pickup on my LT1 drag car. While the capacity of my pan is much greater, I normally run 5 quarts of oil with a standard capacity pump. If needed, when the car needs to be a little faster, I run 4 quarts on a quarter-mile pass at 8200 rpm with no worry. The only time the pressure fluctuates is during the shutdown but I normally click the motor past the lights anyway.

You should try to make sure the pick-up was matched to the pan. It should be positioned about a 1/4 inch off the bottom of the pan. You don't need a high volume pump so make sure you know what you have.

5 - 5.5 quarts is generally enough

Thanks guys I ended up switching to Valvoline V1 20W50 Race oil. I am running 6.3 quarts total and I am not seeping oil or pushing any now .

The oil that came out looks great too.

Also I figured out why the wideband was going nuts....when i got my Y pipe made the guy had the wire over the tail stock and it fell onto the DS and wore down the wires..

Car seems to be running hard .

MT drag radials and spinning the tires cruising at 70 KPH :O hehehehe
