Is it the ring & pinion.. the posi unit? axles?
I ask b/c I cut a 1.69 on the stock rear last night, and everything sounds ok.. but as my friend said last night.. with my tranny being stock (vig 2800 & stage 2 transgo) and my rear being a stock one (except for strange 3.73's and a girdle..).. my car is probably a timebomb waiting to go bewm somewhere in the drivetrain.. probably the rear though. I know since I have an automatic I should be ok for a little longer, but I plan to move to ET Streets soon to become more consistent in running... nitto's depend on the track prep a bit too much, and I also plan to get a bigger stall.
I just wonder if the stock limited slip unit dies if it's worth throwing a $400 auburn in it. What sucks about a 12 bolt is it's throwing $2k at your car only to have to throw more money at it to make it faster again... 12 bolt weighs more, takes more power to turn..
I know you gotta pay to play.. just wondering though

I would venture a guess and say either the teeth on the ring gear and/or the carrier bearings.

Most of the time it is the spider gears in the carrier, sometimes its the springs. Rarely will it be the gears itself. ive seen the gears break in one f-bod around town. The first sign of your diff. goin is what we call the one wheel peel, where only one wheel spins. So when you do your next run/burnout look at the marks or have a buddy watch the tires to see if both are spinning.

Yah did that last night to make sure. I've been concerned for a while since my left nitto is worn significantly more than the right.. only used at the track for the most part. I've been told the weight transfer is what hurts them most.. Originally posted by my94blackz

Last night my buddy checked the car for me during my burnout and both tires seem to burn out evenly

It seems it's usually either the gears or the posi, I hardly ever hear of anyone breaking an axle but that does happen too. If I had an auto I wouldn't be quite as worried about breaking the 10 bolt, A4 cars have run into the 10's (maybe faster) on the stock 10 bolt. I don't think any M6 cars are getting away with that

Javier, here's a good thread related to this topic:

I've seen guys around here break just about everything in the 10 bolt. I haven't seen too many posi units break...they usually give some warning before they're done so they get replaced before they explode. I've seen lots of flattened crush sleeves and busted bearings...those are probably the most common. The next common item would be the ring gear, followed by the pinion gear. Trailing behind that would be axles, but it's usually the 6 speed cars running on slicks that destroy those. I can't say I've ever seen an A4 10 bolt with a busted axle around here (could be wrong though).
What really sucks is when you switch to a 9" rear and still break it...
BANG!

gear/mileage it went out/problem
1. Stock Rearend (@35,000 Miles)-Ring gear lost some teeth
2. Richmond 4.10's (@85,000 Miles)-Ring gear lost 6 teeth, pinion lost 3
3. Precision 4.10's (@89,000 Miles)-10 Teeth off of the Ring, 5 on the pinion, snapped the differential in HALF, C-Clips shot out, twisted an axle (yeah it was ****ed up) oh and it was girdled.
4. Precision 3.73's, New Axles, Differential, EVERYTHING have about 15 launches on it and baby the **** outta it..

100,000 miles (~25 passes): MAC cover, solid pinion-bearing-spacer, studded caps, new bearings, and 3.5" Aluminium-matrix driveshaft installed.
140,000 miles (~40 passes): stock posi decides to shatter a spider gear on lauch (Street Twin & 245 Nitto's).
$1700 repairs as it took out the bearings, ring/pinion, posi (obviously), ABS reluctor ring, and tweaked the axle splines. New Eaton HD posi, GM axles, ABS reluctor gear, bearings, and solid pinion-bearing-spacer installed.
150,000 miles (~45 passes): Eaton posi ALSO shatters a spider gear... replacement covered by Eaton.

I didn't know you could do that to 9in, what in the heck where you doing when it happened?
I welded the tubes, and installed a T/A girdle. I tought about the solid crush sleeve too. My posi is starting to go out, the left tire spins but not like the right one. It's just a matter of time before I grenade it at the track on some ET streets or something. I hope it lasts a while I can't afford a 12bolt or 9in. I am looking into the 8.8 conversion though, and I don't mean a football game.
I crack myself up......ok I'm done now. Jason

I recognize that blown out 9" It's a local guy/ guru. Not sure what happened when he broke it but I do know this. 396/480+n/a hp and McCleod twin on a car that ran 10.70 na is bound to do that with traction.
I've seen slightly better 60' times on some f-bodies that were auto. Autos are much gentler on the rears than a 6-speed. You're able to pre-load the rear which takes a great deal of stress off the axles/gear teeth.
With a 6-speed though.. no chance of any of that. You're likely to break it instantly w/ a 6-speed and those kind of 60' times.
