actually the design of the dual cat y-pipe flows better than the single cat one. and people take off their cat(s) because it's CHEAPER and/or they don't have emissions. A high flow cat will flow almost as good as no cat but costs alot more than a simple exhaust pipe to delete the cat.

Interesting...thats some food for thought. I don't see how you can get much bigger though than the giant coffee can catalytic convertor that they have on the drivers side...guess I never really looked at the 93-95 Y-pipes before.

on single-cat cars....the manifolds dump exhaust into the y-pipe as usual and then the y-pipe chokes it down to into a 2.5" pipe before going into the cat.

on our cars the exhaust is already thru the cats before it gets choked down from the y-pipe. thats probably the more important factor.

How do you figure that MORE restriction = freer flowing exhaust?

Dual cat's wasn't the reason for the extra 10 hp... Funny a 275hp car will dyno the same as a 285hp car, get that.

-*recently discovered*....heads flow a little better
Same heads as the earlier years, we're not talking about the LT4 here.

-OBD2....might argue it manages fuel more efficiently than OBD1. pure speculation
Just like you said, pure speculation.

-new tail lights and interior...hafta be worth 5 ponies at least!
RICER!!!

1996 was the first year for dual cats and 285HP

However, they all go back into the same size straw before exiting out at the rear bumper. Anyway, 10hp to me, is no reason to pick one car over another, especially since it is factory published number.

It was California emissions cars that got dual cats in 1995.

Your right...I do remember reading that. I used to have a 1995 Z28 - build date of 2/1995 and it was single.

No, actually they're not. Some 96 and 97 models got casting # 561 heads which flowed better than the basic LT1 heads. I believe thats what he is talking about.
I don't think any one year stands out as being the "strongest", they all run about the same.

they are not the same heads in the middle of the 96 run they started to use the tooling from the impala heads which flow better than the aluminum heads from 93-95 the casting number for the heads is 561 they have thinner port walls though so when it comes to porting the 93-95 heads they have more potential. yes they're lt1 heads you're right the same... no. everyone knows that on a first gen sbc different castings meant different flow in some cases this is sort of the same thing.
