What is a speed sensor?

A guy at a transmission shop today told me I need a new speed sensor. What is it and what does it do?

(I have a feeling the answer is pretty self-explanatory, but I've never heard of one) :-)

uh it mounts to the tailshaft housing and sends ansignal to pcm to let the pcm know how fast you are going

VSS - vehicle speed sensor.... sends pulses to the PCM based on speed of the tranny tailshaft. See pic for location of VSS on a T56.

Thanks for the info. That's exactly how my car feels right now. It's not a major problem, just feels kind of funny.

Hopefully the new sensor will clear that right up!!!!!

Talking

Well, I got the new speed sensor put on today. Runs great now. I guess the new tranny and torque converter caused the sensor to go.
