What specifically makes the LS1 better than the LT1?
Re: What specifically makes the LS1 better than the LT1?
The LS1 has better heads, flows much better, and has an aluminum sleeve style bolck, which can make for some awesome over boring on the motor.
Re: What specifically makes the LS1 better than the LT1?
Just a suggestion, but why don't all you guys and gals get an LS1: that way you could all post in the LS1 section which, by the way, is the correct tech. site for the LS1 engine.
Re: What specifically makes the LS1 better than the LT1?
I'd have to disagree about the LS1's "great" Aluminum block. When it comes time to rebuild one and if it needs to be bored over you may be SOL. This is because GM made the sleeves so thin that you can't bore them (according to what I read in a magazine). If you try pressing them out and putting new ones in (which runs about $100 appiece at a shop your block is no longer as rigid as it used to be. I'll stick with my iron LT-1 block...
Re: What specifically makes the LS1 better than the LT1?
The main difference is flow and ignition, in stock form.
But guess what? A couple of bucks and you'll fly past any stock LS1.
You have to remember that the LT1 is still a 350 SBC, the time honored engine of many decades. It has a larger and cheaper aftermarket that allows us to easily catch up with our little brothers, the LS1s.
An LT1 can be built into a total monster with even a simple H/C package. Take the LE packages for example. The LE1 will walk ALL over a full bolt on LS1.
Remember also stock for stock that the LS1s came with more power from the factory, having about 350 FWHP, while the LT1s only had about 305-310 FWHP.
It doesn't take much, to catch up.

But you guys have to remember: stick with the old LT1...
...if you don't want to listen to piston slap...
...or if you don't feel like adding a quart of oil every 1000 miles.
Sometimes the LS1 isn't such a winner after all

Re: What specifically makes the LS1 better than the LT1?
Its all about the heads. Ignition doesn't seem to be a big deal in my book considering the opti system, although flawed, is damn good. Put some 18* heads on a lt1 and you can match a ls1 mod for mod. But who gives a **** about ls1's when there are bigger fish to fry?

its a lot lot more than heads an ignition. The suspension is softer yet handles just as well, the ride is therefore smoother. Its an overall quieter car. LT1s are prone to blowby at high rpms. I could go on and on, in short, countless technology improvements have been made on the ls1.
