I never fully appreciated the magnitude of cleverness and wit possessed by so many on this board until now!! 
Your best bet is to ask his car buddies for some suggestions. They may be more helpful, although there are some useful and inexpensive car-related suggestions to be found here. Good luck; your BF is lucky to have you as a GF.
