What should I do when the heads are off?

Hey guys, I blew my head gasket over the summer, and figured while the heads are off I'd have them at least gone through for the normal stuff. I don't remember how much that would roughly cost, but I'm curious how much a good port job would be on the heads and intake. Is this something i should have a pro do or should i attempt it myself? I've done everything on my car except rebuilding the tranny, took it out just didn't rebuild it. I was also curious what type of power increase and E.T.s I might expect. Right now these are my mods... I have SLP CAI, loudmouth catback, 1LE elbow, air foil, and msd wires. I have 2.73 gears in the rear and have run a best of 13.8 with a 2.05 60'. Currently I am unemployed so I don't have a lot of money for it, but this probably won't hapen until spring anyways. Obviously if the heads are cracked i want to just buy performance heads as opposed to stock heads. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

i was in the same situation a couple weeks ago. blew a head gasket and had the heads off. i replaced the cam, and stock rockers with the ones in my sig. also gasket matched the heads but decided i didnt have enough time to port the heads, due to the specifics off it. you have to be very precise or you could actually lose power. anyways another caution is to make dang sure you didnt get any water in the oil. if you did and you upgrade to more power you can count on a spun bearing. also my engine had 100k on it so when i removed the cam the front bearing was shot. normal wear. so i replaced that too. not too much fun to keep the engine clean while pulling it out. anyways id say cam and heads (valve springs, 1.6rr) but be carefull and keep the engine clean and hopefully you wont spin a bearing

Re: What should I do when the heads are off?

Did you do all of this with the engine in the car? That is what I think I will end up doing. I have never rebuilt an engine myself, but I will most likely be working with friends that have. I have about 118,000 on it right now, so assuming things are nice looking inside, I am going to do something performance oriented. I figured, I might as well do headers, should be easier with the heads off right? How much money was it roughly for the rr and the cam? I just figured I'd do as muchas possible becuase I know it isn't going to be a lot of fun doing even just the head gaskets. Appreciate the info Andrew.... anyone else? Also any idea on numbers for performance or 1/4 ets?

i blew my head gasket. while the heads were off, i replaced the plugs and wires and coil, painted my intake manifold, put headers, and a different catback on.

if i had more money, i would have done RR and maybe even a cam
