What to set rev limit to with Hotcam?

I've had my LT4 hotcam kit installed for awhile now but I don't have a rev limit set on the car. I was wondering what you guys set the rev limit at? I haven't had it over 5500 so its not that big of an issue, but I do worry about it incase I ever need more of the upper RPM's

Thanks!

10000 RPM's (minus 4500 RPMs for sanity)

Sorry I coundt resist. Honestly I would like to see a dyno test graph to see where the hotcam is making the most horsepower.

One more thing... It all depends on your engine. Maybe a good idea to find out whats the safest maximum RPM for your particular engine first, and then try not to go beyond that point.

Do you still have the Stock OEM bottom end? that may dictate your max rpms regardless of where the Hotcam makes max HP.

just keeping it safe.

6500 should work well, but in order to know exactly you need to get a dyno graph.....

your peak power should be around 6000-6200rpm

Thanks for the reply guys! I'll set it at 6400 just to be a little safer and it is a stock bottom end.

Thanks again!

I think 6400 would be decent, Mine is at 6200 now, and It seems like I hit the limiter while I still have power

Re: What to set rev limit to with Hotcam?

I've had my setup on the dyno a couple of times (this is with ported heads too) and power was peaking at about 5500 RPM but was hardly dropping off at all at 6200. I set the limiter to 6400 RPM's.

Mine is set at 6200 and the hot cam is still pulling when it shuts down.

Mine has been set at 6700 for the past 2 years[400+runs/15,000 Kms] and have never had a problem!!!!!

I shift at 6200/6300 it just allows a little more latitude!!!

I used to set my shift points at 6200. So if you make the limiter 6400 I think you'll be fine.

I normally set it at 6500 for hotcams. Remember, just because the rev limiter is at 6500, you don't HAVE to shift it that high. It just gives you a little room just so you don't hit the rev limiter if you shift close to 6400 or so.

Re: What to set rev limit to with Hotcam?

With LT4 (or similar) heads, the Hotcam peaks at about 6400rpm. For a manual tranny car I'd set the rev limiter at 6800rpm and shift as close to the limiter as I could without hitting the limiter.

Same goes for an A4 car. But you'll have to play with your PCM shift points since the trans will probably let the engine spin a bit higher than the PCM setpoint before an actual shift occurs. Basically you want the shift to happen a hair before tagging the limiter.

ageed with the forementioned, the thing i would like to know is,what timing chain are you using? if you have the LT4 HD,cloyes roller i will say the max rpm i would shift that cam in a 350-377"would be 6500 and definately be tuned for it as well with a free flowing ex. system or 1-3/4 headers of any kind......

Re: What to set rev limit to with Hotcam?

I have mine set at 6400, with the N2O window switch shutting off the juice at 6200. I shift right at 6000 according to the stock tach. there doesn't seem to be much usable power above that, and I don't want to spin my engine to the moon, even though it sounds cool as hell. I've played with shift points at the track a little bit, and my MPH didn't change whether I shifted at 5800 or 6200.
