What rpm should my car idle at?
96 a4, once warm, it idles at around 600, seems low, my 95 m6 idles at 1000, just seeing if the auto is out a bit, and where is the idle speed adjustment screw?
Re: What rpm should my car idle at?
That is normal.. A4 idle around 550-600 M6's are around 800-900 Its how there are programed from the factory.. Adjusting the screw wont help.. The IAC valve will just compensate for it..

Re: What rpm should my car idle at?
Factory programming, coolant fully warmed up:
A4:
-In neutral: 650rpm
-In drive: 550rpm
M6:
-All: 800rpm
Remember, the factory tach seems to read 100-200rpm higher than the actual idle speed. A "scanner" will let you read the correct rpm from the PCM.

Has the PCM been reprogrammed for any reason? Hard to tell from your signature what the car has in the way of mods.
IF its idling at anything higher than the stock programming, there's a problem. Higher idle does not help anything. Just helps heat up the tranny fluid. You need to get a scanner on it and see what the idle air control (IAC) motor counts are. If they are at "0" and the idle is 1,000rpm, you've probably got a vacuum leak, or the IAC motor is deceased.
