I cant afford to run synthetic in my car. It just turned 110k. What kind of dino are people using? It's between 10-45 deg. here now.

 

If you can't afford synthetic, go with any 10-30w dino oil. Which ever you prefer. I was gonna say 5-30 but you got some mileage on that baby. You can even go with a 10-40w.

 

Do a search on the user name Patman and shoot him and email or PM for a recommendation. He was very helpful with me when I had some oil questions.

Regardless what oil you go with, don't get a Fram filter. They are serious garbage. At least get an AC Delco. Don't skimp on the filter.

 

Synthetic can be cheaper.

I use Amsoil in all my vehicles, and what I do is to change the oil once a year, which is much cheaper than changing dino oil 4 times.
Thing is, you still need to change the filter every 3000 miles. That's not too bad, because you were changing that anyway.

So, assuming you pay a relatively high price for Amsoil, say $8/qt, you divide that by 4 and that's the same as $2 oil 4 times a year. If you drive a lot, the savings come faster because you would have changed you oil more often.

 

What? Fram filters are bad? I just bought a Fram filter with a case of 10-W30 Mobil1 synthetic oil. My car has 109,xxx on it. Did I choose unwisely?

 

Yes, very. Go return the fram filter for another filter. I would go in this order, depending of what you can afford: K&N, Mobil 1, Bosh or STP or AC Delco. Good luck.

As was stated before, running synthetic could actually be the same price as running regular dino oil. I'm running Mobil 1 10w30 and a K&N filter. I plan on changing the oil every 4500-5000 miles. I could probably go more, but what's a few dollars in a multi thousand dollar investment?

 

I use regular Pennzoil 10W30 and an AC Delco filter...Change at 2000 mile intervals.

If you don't want to run synthetic, one oil that works very well but doesn't cost a bundle is Castrol's Syntec Blend. I know I used to mention how much of a ripoff those blends were in the past, but this oil in particular has shown some very good oil analysis results in domestic V8 engines.

Other good low cost oil choices are Schaeffer Oil's Supreme 7000 blend, Pennzoil, Havoline or Chevron. Castrol GTX also works very well too.

 

One more point I should add here though. A lot of people say they don't want to spend the money on synthetics, but instead want to change their oil every 2-3k with dino oil. Why not just use a good synthetic and go much longer between intervals? Synthetics can handle it.

 

Where do you guys buy those other oil filters from????? None of the stores I see have them.

I DO work at the TLE at wally-world, So I do get a 10%discount on all things I need. I do have a leak that might be coming from intake(can't see where), but I did notice intake bolt missing from pass. rear against firewall. So running synth. would be expensive for me. We sell all kinds of FRAM. Reg, extra-guard, and double-guard. I also see alot of GM owners putting MOTORCRAFT in their vehicles. What gives? Same price. So why? Also what weight? It's colder than Hades right now, anywhere from 10-45 degrees. What about additives like slick-50?

 

Stick with a good oil and filter. You shouldn't need any of those 'snake oil' additives. Whatever you would spend on that, put it towards a better oil and/or filter.

Didn't the FTC hit the makers of Slick-50 with a false advertising suit a while back? I could be wrong, but I thought they did.

 

Go for Havoline 10-30. I have been using that no problems, and
I get much better oil pressure than I did w/ Mobil 1 and AmsCrap.

I also had a oil report done after a nice hard dyno session on my car, and it came back JUST fine and excellent viscosity w/ the Havoline (BTW, if anyone wants to see that report, it can be emailed). My 95 Z has about 88k on it.

$1.89 a quart here w/ a Purolator filter

 

This thread really helps make my decision . I will be changing my oil/filter tomorrow.

I will be useing Castrol Syntec Blend 10-30 with a K&N filter .
