What needed to go smog delete
What needed to go smog delete
I need to know what I need to do to go smog delete on my car. I have non-smog headers, no egr, & what is needed to remove the smog pump? Just unhook it & remove it or what? Any help appreciated.

For the EGR, you only need to blank off the connection on the back of the intake manifold that the corrugated tube from #8 primary connects to. You can also remove the EGR valve, and that would require an additional blocking plate. You can remove the vacuum line that runs to the EGR solenoid, and cap the connection on the intake manifold with a vacuum cap (probably about 1/8"). Then you could remove the vacuum line from the solenoid to the EGR valve. No blocking required. If you unplu or remove the EGR solenoid, you will get a code for the missing solenoid. You can add a resistor to the harness connector plug, or you could have the code programmed out of the PCM. There's also a chance you could get code for blocking off the EGR flow from the exhaust... not real common on the OBD-I cars, but happens in maybe 15% of the cases. There's a spoof circuit for the EGR flow, involving a resistor in the MAP circuit, or the diagnostic can be programmed out.
On the AIR system, simply unplug the AIR pump, and as long as the fuse in the system is still "good", you will not get a code. It would be a good idea as a minimum to remove the hose that connects your air inlet ducting to the AIR pump.... that takes a 5/8" vacuum cap. At that point, you can unbolt the pump from the front of the engine, and remove the tubing that connects to the manfolds. You will probably have to cut the tube the runs under the bottom of the timing cover to get it out.
Net gains from all this performance wise = "0". Net weight savings, about 10# with full removal.

Re: What needed to go smog delete
I appreciate the help Fred.
Not too familiar with the resistor etc to get rid of the code for unhooking the EGR, but it will be fine if I have the computer reflashed when the new heads/cam/injectors are on the car right? Once again, I appreciate the help, just didn't want to cap this stuff off all to put it back on again later.
The only reason I asked about the smog pump is I figure if I remove the egr system, I may as well get rid of the pump too, not for performance gain, just to clear space etc. Thanks.
