What to look for in a used LT1?
What to look for in a used LT1?
Ive decided to check out LT1s for my next project car. I unfortunately have always been a mustang guy so don't know any of the quirks of the F-bodies.
Im looking at 93-96 range, anything I should watch out for? Thanks.

Re: What to look for in a used LT1?
Its a very solid motor, a couple of the big quirks are leaking intakes and bad Opti units. Other than that, just look it over for the basics that you would with any other car.
Re: What to look for in a used LT1?
A couple of things to keep in mind is that the 93-95 are OBD-I and the 96 is an OBD-II. If you plan on making modifications the OBD-I is much easier to work with. In 95 Chevy introduced a vented Opti that is supposed to make the optispark last longer. These cars are also known for their rear intake leaks so that may be the first thing you have to fix if the previous owner hasn't already. And if you want to run slicks plan on buying a different rear end because it won't last for long
Re: What to look for in a used LT1?
Check all the fluids make sure they are good, make sure it doesnt miss at high rpms especially when warmed up, that indicates a bad opti. Leaks are bad but there are some common ones that are easy to fix so you might be able to use it as a lower price negotiating point and fix it easy. Make sure the transmission shifts good and doesnt slip.

Thanks guys, when you say intake leak, I assume you mean oil is leaking from the galley(or is it a vacumm issue).
If its missing at high end thats the opti, and im looking at approx 200 bucks for it right?

The intake prob. everyone is speaking of if a comman oil leak in the back of the intake. Easy fix, just pull the intake and use silicone to seal it back and it should be fine.
