Re: what is line boring??

it is boring out the main bearing journals, yes, you need to line bore with splayed caps

Yep, the caps aren't to bore size right out of the box. Your machinist will need to bolt them to spec and bore the main bore to size. That's really about all you need to know.

Typical machine work for any performance oriented engine build shop.

edit: Dave was quicker on the draw..... must be getting old.

or align boring. It's followed by align honing or "line honing" to get the final size.

Choose a good shop which does it regularly and successfully. Steel main caps are sometimes very tough to machine (compared to cast iron) and the main bores don't always end up better than they were originally. You are trying to remove the minimum amount of material from the block and sometimes almost an 1/8 " from the new caps. It's not fun to do correctly.

I just gone done with this problem myself. One of the caps wasn't set all the way down in the register. I got better caps out of the deal and the machine shop was "nice" enough not to charge for the align boring the second time. Like I screwed it up in the first place.
Actually, I am waiting for Brett(went thru Lloyd) to design my cam and get it out to me. Warm weathers comin and the cars ready to go!!! Well, sort of....
