What kinda water to MiX w/ DexCool?

I'm sick of buying 4 gallon's of PRE MIXED dexcool when I can buy just TWO and then mix it with water These company's got smart cause now their selling DOUBLE the gallon's of coolant but really your only getting HALF the product Now were paying for a half gallon of water instead of a FULL gallon of coolant... So I wanna know what's better to mix regular NON PREMIXED dexcool with? Spring water or Distilled Water?

thanks

The low coolant light coming on is fairly normal for these cars. As long as the coolant isn't really low, there's no reason to worry. You can replace the sensor or unplug it. I unplugged mine. Dexcool is available at the usual suspects. Autozone, PepBoys, Wally World, KMart...

Depending on where you live, tap might be ok. The calcium content here is way to high to safely use IMO. That being said, I bet there is not a dealership or garage in this town that doesn't use tap.

Yep. DexCool is the right stuff for the 4th-gen Camaros. You could check to see what you have in there first if you are concerned.

orange coolant = DexCool
green coolant = plain old coolant

Dexcool is what we're supposed to use. But then you run into some F-bods out of the factory with regular green coolant. Yes there are a couple. There was a discussion about this a while ago. It doesnt really matter what you use, (green or orange) just replace with whatever was previously in the car to stay consistent. Just keep your cooling system maintained. I use Dexcool (what my service manual says plus the car came with Dexcool) and tap water and works just fine.

2 questions... we are supposed to have the orange stuff?

crap my car had the green stuff... maybe i ought to flush it all out a couple times and put the orange stuff in...

what is the problem w/ mixing the two i know ur not supposed to but what does it do?

and what is the advantage of the orange stuff?

In most instances we are supposed to run Dexcool. If you dont have it or run it, it doesnt matter. Green coolant is fine. Flush the coolant for maintenence purposes only if you need to.

I dont know what exactly happens when you mix the two. The green coolant has more silicates in it. Dexcool doesnt have as much (or any, i dont really know). It is supposed to help with waterpump life and keep the waterpump drive seal in good shape if I remember correctly. Dexcool is supposed to have better cooling properties as well. I'm no expert and I'm trying to remember from the long discussion on Dexcool vs the green stuff thread from a few months ago, so feel free to correct me.

Just to clarify.... 93 and 94 came with conventional "green" ethylene glycol based coolant. In either (late?) 95 or 96, GM changed over to the extended life "orange" ethylene glycol coolant.

I've run Dex-Cool in my 94 Formula since my first flush and fill about 7 years ago. Never any problems of any kind. The shop that built my engine concurs with this choice.

It is important that you TOTALLY flush the system before switching one way or the other. Remember, to drain the block, you need to pull the block drain plugs, including the knock sensor.

if you have lots of sulfur in your tap water use distilled because the sulfur will eat away your heater core if you have city water thatwould be fine to use
