What is a good timing chain to use in a 396 LT1?

Need to upgrade my stock timing chain.
The chain seems to have lots of play in it.
I can push in the chain on both sides with my finger when installed and get play. Seems like alot to me.
anyway,
What would be a good double roller timing chain manufacturer and part number to use?
Cloyes? Others?

my 396 is N/A.

All questions that can be answered in LT1tech, but youll learn that...

anyway, unless you have vented opti and electric water pump you are stuck with the stock chain or a GM heavy duty used in LT4s.

Any cloyes chain over $50 will do the trick, or almost any other manufacturer for that matter, compcams, crane, etc...

dont forget though, a vented opti, clearanced timing cover, and elctric water pump is required to run a standard SBC double roller timing set on an LT1 with an optispark.

Just a little interesting fact, the fastest naturally aspirated LT1 in the country (9.70s @~140) uses a factory 94 timing chain and optispark!

thx for the reply.
I have a '95 vented Opti but a standard stock water pump.
I though there was a chanin that would allow me to run a double roller with the stock pump?

If not what timing chains are available that will not stretch?
Are th crane, comp cams, colyes better than the stock ones?

And how would i get advance/retard adjustability in my timing gears? I would like to have +/- 6degrees

The true double rollers will help with stretch in higher hp motors, especially if they will see lots of miles over a stock chain. That 9s lt1 only puts 20 some passes a year on that chain then replaces it.

Most any good timing set you buy will have +-4 degrees and 0 for adjustablilty, then you can buy offset crank keys to adjust up to 3*i think, and the offset dowel pins, but those are a little tougher to use.

So you can get a stronger chain and sproket set with adjustability for my setup?

If you modify the crank/cam timing with an adjustable timing gear setup, you will have to compensate with programming in the computer. It will throw off the orientation of the optispark.
