Unhappy What To Expect - Approximate Cost

Well
My water pump finally went...
Drove it out of the underground parking and noticed some stiffness in the steering... parked it up just to discover a niagra falls that goes out from under the waterpump. The only thing was left to do is to park it back.
I’ve looked at it from the top and couldn’t see any openings but I’m sure it's going from the little hole in the back of it.
In any case, Don't really know what would be the cost of the replacement and the labor (since I don’t have a space/time to do it myself) I would writher pay someone to do it. Just don't want to get ripped off since I never had to deal with this problem and don't really know how much labor involved.
Please let me know what would be the price range for the job and the parts
Thanks
Alex

P.S. Why would my steering crap up at the same time??

The steering issue may just be the coolant causing the belt to slip.

What he said ^^

Pay someone on the board to do it, the water pump costs like 200 dollars from Autzone I think. However you could get an electric water pump for like 140. As far as labor, well I'd do it for 80 bucks. But you don't live anywhere near me find someone on the board. This is an easy fix, but your opti probably got soaked if you lost a water pump seal.

And that is an expensive part. Like 250 brand new plus shipping.

All you gotta do is pull off the fans empty radiator, disconnect the hoses, unbolt the pump put scrap off the old gasket material real well apply more sealant/gasket put it back on. Rebolt, connect hoses, put in fans, refill radiator bleed the line and you are done.

Pay someone on the board to do it
If someone can do it for me - I don't mind
Would defenatly pay to someone whov'e done it before instead of "know it all" mechanics

About an electronic water pump - would it be a good idea to do??
I know i can free up a dozzen extra horses by doing it but reliability vise - is it on the same level??
thanks in advance

Re: What To Expect - Approximate Cost

Same thing happened to me... water pump starting leaking badly from the weep hole. I got a CSR electric water pump and a new optispark. Before I noticed the leak, I had very bad hesitation above 4500 RPM so i figured my opti was about done... not sure if I had a slow leak at first which shot the opti, or if my opti was just bad to begin with hehe. I can't really suggest an e-w/p yet because I'm not done installing mine. I have to wait for a friend to come over because I know nothing about wiring.

Re: What To Expect - Approximate Cost

Some people complain that in hot parts of the country that it can cause issues. I don't have one personally so I couldn't comment. But with a 160 thermo and programmed fans I find it hard to believe youl possibly run into any issues.

Go to the local area forum, and post in there be like. I LIVE HERE, WHO CAN FIX MY CAR FOR DIRT CHEAP. And someone will do it, because seriously some of us have done this fix like 20+ times. I did it four times in one day, twice on my own car when I let my friend align the cam shaft pin while I got lunch.

Big mistake! Lol

I got a replacement waterpump(with a lifetime warrantee) from Advanced Auto Parts for $130, and my mechanic quoted me at $185 for labor alone. Thats high but at this point I don't even care, I just want my damn car to run right. It was great up until recently, now everything is crapping out at once

Same here
got quoted in one of the garages 120 parts and 170 labor CAD..
the only problem is that this shop mostly work on 90's american POS cars (grandams, chrislers, miniwans and the rest of such) and don't really have a clue what to do on my car. the price they got was by the book.
I'll probably call around to more dedicated shops after a long weekend to see if I get betted respond. Plus if the opti is still alive i want to keep it this way.

Re: What To Expect - Approximate Cost

Water pump actually is pretty easy. I thought it would be somewhat tough since I am doing the opti as well, but it is very straightforward. Since I'm going with an electric WP I have a bit more work to do. If you are just doing a stock replacement, you can knock it out within 4 hours I bet. Those 4 hours would save you $200 or more... not to mention you will gain more knowledge about your car
