Question What else is needed to install gauges?

allright, in the near future for tuning purposes, i am going to be installing some gauges in the 'maro. i plan on intalling auto meter z-series gauges. i want electrice fuel pressure gauge (inside mount on a-pilar), oil temp gauge (inside mount on a-pilar), and electrice tranny temp gauge 100-250 degrees (inside mount under cd player in custom plate). besides the gauge pods for the a-pilar, what else will i need to complete this project. i think the gauges come with senders and npt fittings, but i am not for sure. any suggestions or tips would be appreciated greatly. thanks guys

Most of the time, guages don't come with the senders, so check into that.
Wire, butt connectors, and add-a-circuits (from auto zone) should do you. Well, don't forget wire crimpers.
PM me if I can help.

No you will just need wire and connecters, and the ting to take out the inside of a valve stem. Sorry, don't know what it's called... An electric fuel pressure gauge comes with everything you'll need, so does the tranny temp gauge (wire and connecters again). I would think the oil temp would work on the same principle as the tranny gauge so you should be good there as well.

i'm going to be installing two of the same gauges in my t/a...it seems like we're both in the same boat. i've looked around and searched the archives for gauge install write-ups and couldn't find any...am i just missing here, or have none been developed?

I was gonna do that myself, but I'm shipping out to the Gulf real soon. Won't have the time.
Anyway, I've got a pic of where to install the tranny temp sender. I've done my car, best buddy's TA, and another friend's Lightning. Just let me know what info you need.

Electric Fuel Pressure:

You need to connect the pressure sensor directly to the Schrader fuel test pressure port, or to a line attached to that port. My personal preference is NOT to attach the sensor directly to the Schrader valve. It is not firmly attached to the fuel line, only swedged on, and if you exert too much pressure tightening things, or the engine torques and the sensor hits the cowl, the connection can break off the fuel line.

Remove the valve core from the Schrader valve, using a standard tire valve core tool. Get an NOS part # 17535 -4AN 90-deg swivel fitting. This fitting attaches directly to the Schrader fitting, turns the connection 90-degrees so it is away from the cowl, then allows you to "aim" the connection in the direction you want. Then get a 24" -4AN S/S braided hose from NOS, with a male 1/8" NPT fitting on the other end. Use a standard brass 1/8" NPT "coupling" to attach the S/S hose to the threads for the pressure sensor. Locate the sensor out of the way... I used to have mine behind the PCM.

Run the wires from the sensor, through the big rubber grommet in the firewall behind the PCM. What you do next depends on whether you bought the AutoMeter 270-deg sweep, 3-piece gauge (~$180), or the 90-deg sweep, 2-piece gauge (~$80). Let me know which one you buy and I'll tell you how to wire it. Point is, everything from the sensor to the gauge comes with the kit. You just have to get the parts to connect it to the Schrader valve.

Electric Oil Temperature:

I drilled and tapped the oil drain plug, and screwed the oil temp sensor into the drain plug. Put a "plug" in the line so you can unplug it to drain the oil.

Electric Tranny Temp:

There is a port of the correct size on the passenger side of the tranny.

You want gauges?????

I've written this response so many times that someone asked if they could copy it and put it on a website, and they did. I'm surprised a "search" doesn't show it.

I also have an abbreviated version of putting the gauges in the vents on my website, and I know Project TransAM has the link in their database.

I just put this in the other day. N2O Gauge . To be honest with you guys putting in these gauges are pretty much common sense. Just read the instruction that come with the gauges.

Not to hijack this thread, but....

Fred, does that NOS swivel fitting you speak of so often also exit in 4AN?

If so, would you know off-hand a good T line to attach to that, that would then split to connect to my NX fuel solenoid line, and also to my Autometer full-sweep electric FP gauge sensor?

I figure since you guys have installed these parts before you might already know a good part # to use for the T-line.

I just went to a hose and line supply store and picked one up. It was like $3.50. It just needs to be 1 female 2 male -4AN T. If they had one here it shouldn't be to hard to find.
