Arrow What does code 16 mean?

I havnt driving my car much in the last year, but my company truck broke down so now Im driving. I pulled up in the driveway after work and got a check engine light. I looked at my scanmaster and it gave me codes 16 and 44. Code 44 is for one of the oxygen sensors, I figure they need replaced anyway. But this code 16 from shoebox's website is "16 Distributor ignition system (low resolution pulse)." WTF My opti going out maybe? The car seems to run fine. Whats up?

hey not to hijack your post or anything, but how do you like your gears? 4.10's?

As for the code 16, i've been told its an opti issue that happens a lot, meaning that you have to replace the whole opti and not just the cap and rotor. Best bet is to probably clear the codes and see if it pops on again, and if it does then looks like you'll be giving Jason Crommer a call. He's the guy to go to for your opti needs...its about $220 for the whole thing.

Hope that helps.

The car runs fine. No misses. I replaced the opti 15k ago, and have had no problems. This puzzles me. Maybe thats why Im a diesel tech Actually I hate diesels

Oh yea, and the 4.10's are the ****. But, unless you want them to break, or at the least whine to hell, wait till you can afford a 12 bolt. Im on my second set of 4.10's, and I could have paid for more than half of a 12 bolt by now

If your engine is still running, the DTC 16 is a "stored" code, not an "active" code. When the PCM can not find the low res pulse from the Opti for two crank revolutions, it will shut down the fuel system.

It is not unusal to see the DTC 16 pop up in a scan. You won't know when it was set, because it doesn't appear to turn the SES light on. It might be a sign of impending Opti doom.... it was when it started showing up at about 50K miles on my 94, and rust from the bearing retainer started blinding the optical sensor. But I have pulled the codes from a lot of LT1's, and DTC 16 is often present on healthy cars.

The thing to do is clear it and see how soon it comes back.... appears to set at times when the PCM can't find the Opti pulse at startup. If it keeps coming back right away, the Opti MAY be nearing the end of its useful life.

Sweet...Looks like your opti problems seem to be under control according to injuneer.

As for the gears, most likely i'll end up getting the 3.83's. Seems like there is enough meet on the ring gear not to break. Havent really heard of people breaking those as often anyways.

good luck!

That shutting down the fuel thing is interesting. About a month ago when I went to the mall christmas shopping, I stalled my car in the parking lot. Im used to driving a cummins, and not giving throttle when letting out of the clutch I had my tunes turned up, and it stalled, lol. Anyway, the damn thing wouldnt start back up. I tried a quite a few times in about a 30 second period before it started back up. Im betting thats when it set the code. Thanks a ton for the help man
