What to do have Rust on Cylinder Walls

I bought a used engine to swap into my firebird and before I got the heads on the cylinder walls got a chance to surface rust. What should I use to clean this up? Brad

Scrub the rust off with a coarse rag and oil.

I tried that and couldnt get it off. What happens if I leave it on there? I am gonna go and try to scrub harder this time and see what happens.

It's probably inconsequential surface rust - unprotected iron will do that almost immediately in moist air. You have peaks and valleys in the cylinder hone pattern, and you probably can't scrub the rust out of the scratches without an abrasive - you should probably just clean them up with paper towles or lint free rags and wd or something similar and call it a day. I suppose you could use a scrub brush if you wanted. I had that happen to me a couple times in the past and nothing came of it.

Thanks for the help man. I decided to put my timing chain cover on instead of mess with the cylinders but going back out in a sec to try the rough rag and wd 40. Brad
